When Magic Johnson first realized his HIV condition, he stepped away from basketball for good. At 31, he played his last season with the Lakers. Along the way, the 5x NBA Champion suffered many hardships, especially the early reactions from his peers. So, today on an important day, he shares his health update.
“Today, on World AIDS Day, I take a moment to reflect on my journey living with HIV for 33 years. It’s been a long road, but I’m healthy and stronger than ever due to the medical advancements, research, and work of those in the HIV/AIDS community! I want to thank all the doctors, scientists, and everyone who’s contributed to the HIV/AIDS fight.” The tweet from the Lakers legend continued.
“We’ve come a long way, but there’s still a lot of work to do—especially when it comes to finding a cure and fighting the stigma that still affects so many, specifically in marginalized communities. Let’s honor those we’ve lost to HIV/AIDs and work to support those still fighting!” From being unable to participate in sports to now being at the ownership table of multiple sports and franchises, Magic Johnson surely has come a long way. But the first steps did not come easy for the 65-year-old.

Addressing the crowd during Martin Luther King’s legacy on the 60th anniversary, the 12x All-Star opened up about the struggles. He pointed out that numbers were high in black and brown communities at the time, and it was difficult at first to publicize the decision. At the ASU campus, Magic Johnson also recalled that previously only one medication was available–AZT.

As his latest tweets suggest, there have been medical advancements, and the 3x Finals MVP once stated that the number was close to 40. And there was another instance which the Lakers’ legend credits for ‘saving his life.’
Love from fans gave Magic Johnson another chance
Before the Olympics in 2024, BBC News interviewed Magic Johnson to talk about the Olympic’s journey. As stated earlier, the Michigan State alum had to stop hooping which intertwined with the 1992 Barcelona games. Katty Kay, the host asked the 4x Assists Champion about his reaction when certain players refused to play alongside him.

“I was upset then,” and “Yeah, very angry.” But it was the former Commissioner who allowed Magic Johnson to participate again. And the first task was the NBA All-Star game that year. Without participating in the league that season, 658,211 fans voted as per basketball-reference.
David Stern permitted him to play in the All-Star game and that changed people’s minds. That’s why during Stern’s memorial service, Magic Johnson said, “That game saved my life.” As he was thankful for the former commissioner to allow him to play and spread a positive message to the world.
