Alongside the Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras, Sigma has announced the development of a new full-frame f/2.8 zoom lens, the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS Sports.
Thanks to Sigma’s High-response Linear Actuator (HLA) technology, the large-aperture zoom lens promises high-speed autofocus. It also features optical image stabilization with Sigma’s latest “OS2” algorithm, promising excellent stabilization performance.
Sigma notes that the upcoming 70-200mm f/2.8 lens makes a perfect companion for the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art and Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art zoom lenses, with the new telephoto zoom completing what many professional photographers to be considered something of a “holy trinity” of f/2.8 lenses.
The lens will be available in December in L-Mount and E-mount versions. Sigma has not released any pricing information.
That is everything Sigma’s global operations have said about the lens and provided to PetaPixel. However, per DPReview, Sigma France shared slightly more information about the lens, including some relatively basic specs.
Sigma France says the lens will feature 20 elements organized across 15 groups, including half a dozen FLD elements, a pair of super-low dispersion elements, and three aspherical elements.
The lens will feature a 77mm filter, the same size filter as the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II G lens, but smaller than the 82mm filter thread of the Panasonic Lumix S Pro 70-200mm f/2.8 lens for L-Mount.
Sigma France also states that the new 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN Sports lens will weigh around 1,345 grams (47.4 ounces), which is 300g heavier than the Sony GM II lens (without the tripod mount attached) and 225g lighter than the Panasonic lens, also without its tripod mount attached. The E-mount version of Sigma’s new lens is 1,335g, by the way, but 10g is a negligible weight difference.
The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is 205mm (8.07 inches) long, 5mm longer than Sony’s GM II zoom and 3mm shorter than Panasonic’s, so all three lenses are very similar in size.
Between Sigma Global’s official information and Sigma France’s extra details, that is all that is known about the upcoming Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN Sports lens. Given its “Sports” pedigree, the lens should be robust, swift, and well-suited to professional applications. Sigma promises that it will deliver a “high level of performance.” Time will tell, but it could be an exciting option for E-mount and L-Mount photographers.
If Sigma’s 70-200mm f/2.8 Sport lens for DSLR cameras is anything to go by, mirrorless shooters are in for a treat.
