Introducing the Google Pixel Watch 2: Upgraded Chipset, Better Sensors, and More

Google has officially introduced its newest smartwatch, the Google Pixel Watch 2. At the core, it looks the same as the predecessor, but that’s not something new for Google devices. Consider the Pixel 8 series, for example. It looks almost identical to the Pixel 7 series.
But even though the new Pixel Watch 2 looks similar to the original smartwatch, it brings some major upgrades. Specifically, the new smartwatch features an upgraded processor, better battery life even with the always-on display feature turned on, new safety features, and new sensors for a detailed insight into health and fitness.
All-Day (And All-Night) Comfort and A Better Design
Google designed the Pixel Watch 2 to deliver all-day comfort. In fact, Google claims to provide superior comfort even when worn at night. The main reason behind such a bold claim is a revamped build. This new watch features a construction of 100% recycled aluminum.
Such a construction makes the Google Pixel Watch 2 10% lighter than its predecessor. Thanks to that, you get a comfortable wearing experience when you’re sleeping.
To take comfort and user experience to the next level, Google worked with the crown of the Pixel Watch 2. It’s now larger and sits more flush with the circular silhouette. For this design change, it’s easier to use the crown to navigate through the watch’s UI.
All-New Processor and Battery Performance of Google Pixel Watch 2
Under the hood, the Google Pixel Watch 2 features a brand-new quad-core CPU. This robust SoC makes the smartwatch deliver smoother and better performance across the board. Google has paired this robust SoC with a low-power co-processor.
To be exact, the predecessor utilizes an old Exynos 9110 chipset. While this SoC made the smartwatch offer a snappy performance, its efficiency was nothing to write home about. That’s why Google shifted to the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 with the Google Pixel Watch 2. It’s a 4nm chipset that offers class-leading efficiency.
The battery life of the Google Pixel Watch 2 also saw an upgrade. While the predecessor came with a 294mAh battery, the new watch features a 306mAh cell. While the difference is negligible, the slight increase in the capacity with an efficient chipset brings better battery life.
To be exact, the brand-new smartwatch offers 24 hours of battery life, even when you have the always-on display feature turned on. And there’s no need to worry even when the battery status of the Pixel Watch 2 is low. It comes with a faster charging rate, letting you get the battery to 50% in just 30 minutes.
Accurate Health Insights with Better Sensors
The Pixel Watch 2 features three new sensors. They are all aimed at delivering a deeper insight into your health. These sensors work alongside the improved AI heart rate algorithm. With this combination, the new smartwatch can offer a much more accurate heart rate reading than the predecessor.
Specifically, the new smartwatch is up to 40% more accurate when tracking the heart rate during vigorous activities. This improvement in sensor accuracy means you get better readings for other health metrics, which include calories burned, Daily Readiness Score, sleep, and Active Zone Minutes.
The Google Pixel Watch 2 also comes with a new continuous electrodermal activity (cEDA) sensor. It powers the Body Response feature found in the smartwatch. With a machine learning algorithm, this new sensor can offer better insight into the possible signs of stress.

It also incorporates heart rate variability, heart rate, and skin temperature. And when the algorithm picks up physical indicators of negative and positive stress, the Pixel Watch 2 will send you a notification. With this, you can either take the necessary actions to reduce your stress or reflect on how you’re feeling at that specific moment.
Besides, the Google Pixel Watch 2 has a new skin temperature sensor. It can track the temperature at night to offer detailed insight into your sleep. The sensor also helps the watch to monitor changes in your overall wellness.
You can easily check on your health and get important details with your voice. All you have to do is open the Google Assistant app and ask what you want to know. The Pixel Watch 2 will then offer detailed information, such as how well you slept last night.
Improved Fitness Tools on Google Pixel Watch 2
With the Google Pixel Watch 2, it’s easier to improve your body fitness level. The smartwatch comes with new Pace Training features and Heart Rate Zone Coaching. Google tuned them to help you track your fitness and workout goals. For example, you will get an alert when your heart rate zone changes during a HIIT workout session.
Moreover, the Pixel Watch 2 comes with all the Fitbit features that were present in the predecessor. That includes Sleep Score, Sleep Profile, Daily Readiness score, and 40 different workout modes.
Wear OS 4 and New Security Features
The Google Pixel Watch 2 comes with Wear OS 4, which makes the smartwatch easily customizable. The new watch OS also brings smarter notifications, improved accessibility, and new apps.
Additionally, the Pixel Watch 2 improves personal safety. It features Emergency SOS and fall detection. There’s Medical ID, Safety Check, and Emergency Sharing too. All of these will offer you peace of mind when you’re out and about. Also, they’ll help you get assistance right when you need it.
Pricing Information
The Pixel Watch 2 is now available with a starting price tag of $350 for the Bluetooth model. There’s an LTE version available too. That’s priced at $400.
