Signature Fitness Club and Staples store close, Insomnia Cookies to hold grand opening Saturday

From the abrupt closure of a local fitness center to a new cure for late night dessert cravings, the Naperville business scene is seeing changes this summer.
Signature Fitness Club closes its doors
Signature Fitness Club has ceased operations in Naperville, Schaumburg and Yorkville.
The Naperville location opened at 1531 N. Aurora Road in 2015, according to archive stories. Five years later, Signature announced plans for a second location in Yorkville, which ultimately opened at 825 Erica Lane. Signature’s third club in Schaumburg was located at 141 Barrington Road.
In a posted sign announcing its closure, the Naperville club — which was in the same strip mall as the also shuttered Fire It Up Taco Fusion Grill — said, “It is with heavy hearts that we have made the heartbreaking decision to close Signature Fitness Club, effective immediately.” The sign cites the COVID-19 pandemic and the company’s inability to reach agreeable rental terms as factors in the shutdown.
“After over a decade at our current location, we have been unable to reach a satisfactory arrangement to continue under the existing rental terms,” the sign reads. “Strip mall ownership was graceful but unable to continue.”
Naperville spokeswoman Kate Schultz said the city did not receive advance notice of the club’s closure but is aware of it.
Lynn Dubajic Kellogg, an economic development consultant to the city of Yorkville, confirmed in an email Tuesday that Signature’s Yorkville location had also closed. Schaumburg spokeswoman Allison Albrecht said it is her understanding that Signature’s Schaumburg club closed earlier this month.
A certificate of occupancy was provided to Signature Fitness Club for its Schaumburg location on March 22, Albrecht said.
According to online records from the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office, Sheldon Botha is the registered agent of Signature Fitness Club Inc. He could not be reached for comment.
Insomnia Cookies holding grand opening Saturday
This weekend, it’s officially cookie o’clock.
Saturday marks the grand opening of Insomnia Cookies. The new store, located at 22 E. Chicago Ave., is the company’s 11th location in the Chicago metropolitan area and 15th statewide.
Across the country, the national bakery chain, which specializes in offering late-night dessert deliveries, operates more than 280 locations.
Last month, Insomnia announced it would be establishing its first Naperville store but kept the exact location and opening date under wraps. This week, though, the company released details for its official Saturday launch.
The grand opening event is scheduled for noon to 1 a.m. Customers who come in or order online during those hours Saturday will receive one free classic cookie off Insomnia’s menu. There also will be giveaways and a prize wheel, the company said.
Insomnia’s Naperville bakery will be open seven days a week, with hours that extend to midnight or 1 a.m. depending on the day.
Staples closes its store on Ogden Avenue
Office supply retailer Staples has closed its location at 1125 E. Ogden Ave. in Naperville.
The store is no longer listed on Staples’ website and in its window there is a sign that reads, “This Staples store has closed.”
A call to the Ogden store’s number is met with a recorded message that says, “Thank you for calling Staples. This location is no longer open for business.”
Staples did not return requests for comment.
The chain still retains a Naperville location at 1552 Route 59. An employee of that store confirmed by phone that it was still open for business.
Naperville welcomes The Good Feet Store
The Good Feet Store launched its first Chicago area location Saturday in Naperville’s Springbrook Prairie Pavilion at 2517 W. 75th St.
Specializing in selling personally-fitted arch supports, the company has more than 250 retail locations across the country and abroad. Its newly launched Naperville location is the first in a series of new stores planned for the Chicago metropolitan area, the company said in a news release earlier this month.
The Good Feet Store’s expansion into the Chicago area is part of larger growth aspirations the company has for 2024. It plans to add 40 new locations in the coming year.
