Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain Sunday and is considered week-to-week moving forward, reports NBC Sports and NFL Network.
Mahomes left the Chiefs’ 21-7 win over the Cleveland Browns in the fourth quarter and was replaced by Carson Wentz. He was visibly limping off the field when the game ended.
“Patrick, his right ankle has been hurt. It’s not broken, but it’s sore,” Kansas City coach Andy Reid said after the game. “He’ll get started on the rehab part of it as we go, and then we’ll just have to see how he does. It’ll literally be day to day. He probably could’ve gone back in. He wanted to go back in. There was no need for that.”
Mahomes said after he felt he could have returned to the game, but the “smart decision” was to let Wentz finish.
The Chiefs improved to 13-1 with the victory. They have a two-game lead on the Buffalo Bills for first place in the AFC, but their next two games will happen in the next 10 days.
Kansas City next plays on Saturday against the Houston Texans and then again on Christmas against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Mahomes has played through a high ankle sprain before. He suffered the injury in a January 2023 Divisional Round playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He missed one quarter of that game before returning, and he didn’t miss any time the rest of the playoffs, leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory.
Mahomes finished Sunday’s game completing 19 of 38 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. So far this season, Mahomes has thrown 22 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and for 3,348 yards.
