Swedish death metal vocalist dead at 52 from cancer complications

Tomas Lindberg, vocalist for Swedish melodic death metal band At the Gates, died Tuesday morning at the age of 52 following complications related to ongoing cancer treatment, according to a statement posted by the band on Instagram.
“Despite intensive medical efforts, his life could not be saved,” his bandmates stated.
Paying tribute to their frontman in the social media statement, they wrote: “You were an inspiration to us all, a true friend, both compassionate and sympathetic. You will always be remembered for your generosity and your creative spirit. You will be eternally missed. Forever in our hearts.”
Lindberg’s death comes only one month after he revealed in August 2025 that he was receiving “around-the-clock” hospital care. The metal vocalist was first diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma in December 2023 — a type of cancer affecting the mouth and palate — Loudwire reported.
He had undergone surgery that “took away a big part of the roof of the mouth,” as he explained in a statement written in March but released only last month. Lindberg disclosed that, despite the procedure and subsequent radiation treatments, “some remains of the cancer” were discovered in early 2025, the report said.
Before his surgery, Lindberg completed vocal recordings for an upcoming At the Gates album in a single day, according to the outlet. In his last public statement, he wrote, “I hope you are all well. Take care of yourself, your loved ones and the time you have on this earth.”
Best known for his work with At the Gates, Lindberg was a prolific collaborator in the metal scene. He performed with numerous bands, including Disfear, Skitsystem, Lock Up, Nightrage, The Crown, Sign of Cain, The Lurking Fear and Grotesque.
Outside of music, Lindberg worked as a social studies teacher. In a 2021 interview with Loudwire, he explained how his teaching career began “as an extra job in-between tours” but became more meaningful due to “the gratitude I received from students.”
