MUNDY TWP, MI – The Mundy Township Senior & Enrichment Center will mark a major milestone next week with the opening of its new building at Mundy Miracle Commons, a 100-acre outdoor recreation complex.
A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at the facility located at 1286 W. Hill Road that’ll featuring refreshments, mock-aritas, a vaccine clinic and giveaways.
Community leaders are expected to attend, along with a senior resident who will share how the expanded facility will benefit the community.
The celebration continues with a Family Day event from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, during which visitors can enjoy food trucks, golf cart tours of The Commons, miniature therapy horses, a coffee and donut war, crafts, and games.
Ahead of those festivities, the center will hold a soft opening for the public on Monday, Sept. 29, offering residents their first look at the new space.
The new 7,000-square-foot facility was built at a cost of $2.6 million.
Funding came from a $2 million grant from the State of Michigan, a $500,000 contribution from the C.S. Mott Foundation, and $100,000 from the township’s Capital Improvement Fund.
Program coordinator Zophael Ray, who has worked at the center for about three and a half years, said the new space reflects a shift in both size and vision.
“While we’re primarily a senior center, the enrichment park means everyone is invited,” Ray said. “So our seniors can bring their kids, grandkids and everybody can participate in activities together.”
Mundy Township has a significant senior population — more than 20% of its residents are 65 or older — and the center has served as a lifeline for older adults seeking social connections, recreation, and wellness opportunities.
Until now, the facilities available for seniors had been tight on space.
“Aside from being in a whole lot bigger space and not quite as crammed as we were, we also have access to the pickleball courts for fitness, access to walking trails,” Ray said. “It’s a lot more open and more inviting. We have a dedicated room for arts and crafts, which has always been a big focus for our center.”
Ray emphasized people of all ages are welcome and said various special activities will be held throughout October to celebrate the opening.
