The way most Colorado high school sports teams get ranked and seeded for the postseason will change, starting in the 2026-27 school year.
CHSAA announced that its selection and seeding index will exclusively use MaxPreps ratings and eliminate the RPI half of the formula, beginning fall 2026.
The CHSAA Board of Directors unanimously voted to approve the move Oct. 15 during its monthly board meeting.
CHSAA has used RPI to rank and seed teams since at least 2015 and has incorporated MaxPreps ratings as the other half of the equation since 2022.
RPI is a formula that calculates team/schedule strength based on your team’s winning percentage, your opponent’s win percentage and your opponents’ opponents records.
MaxPreps doesn’t include pure winning percentage in its ratings. But the national company’s metrics incorporate schedule strength already by factoring in scoring margins and results for every team in comparison to others around the state.
