A 911 call has revealed new details about the death of chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky.
The chess star’s club, Charlotte Chess Center, previously shared on Oct. 20 that Naroditsky had died at age 29, releasing a statement from his family on X. A representative for the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office also confirmed Naroditsky’s death to PEOPLE.
According to a 911 call made by Naroditsky’s friend, the late player was found unresponsive at home after last hearing from him roughly 24 hours prior. “I went and did a wellness check, and he’s passed out on the couch, but he’s not responsive,” the friend can be heard telling the dispatcher in the audio obtained by PEOPLE.
Later in the clip, the dispatcher instructed the friend to lie Naroditsky’s body flat and remove anything from underneath his head, before the friend said that police officers had arrived at the scene.
According to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department incident report previously obtained by PEOPLE, authorities responded to the call at a private residence in the southern suburbs of Charlotte, N.C. around 7:11 p.m. There, Naroditsky was found unresponsive.
A medic later pronounced him dead, authorities said, per the report.
The report noted that Naroditsky’s death is being treated as sudden or natural, and that it is being investigated as a potential suicide or drug overdose.
