The Dallas Stars’ Sunday evening matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins began on a somber note with the team paying tribute to its former owner, Tom Hicks.
Hicks, who owned the Stars from 1995-2011, died on Saturday at the age of 79.
Tributes from Stars figureheads (as well as the Texas Rangers, which Hicks owned for a significant period as well) have been pouring in Sunday leading up to puck drop vs. the Penguins, and the matchup began with a moment of silence for the team’s former owner.

After the moment of silence, Stars’ legendary color analyst Daryl “Razor” Reaugh offered up a tribute on the Victory+ broadcast. Reaugh, who’s been in the Stars’ broadcast booth since 1996, called Hicks “a titan of D-FW sports.”
“What a loss. What a man,” Reaugh said on Victory+. “An absolute titan of D-FW sports and the landscape here, the business community.
“He loved that era’s Dallas Stars. His boys. He worked to understand the game better; he gave us every tool to win. He and [wife] Cinda threw some epic parties on Beverly. My heartfelt condolences to [Hicks’ family] Cinda, Tommy, Mack, Alex, Robert, William, Catherine. Just a legendary American.
“And you know what, it’s so appropriate that they would be wearing these jerseys, the ‘99s, on this night.”
The Stars were clad in their alternate jerseys when they hit the ice on Sunday, the sweaters an homage to the Stanley Cup championship the team won under Hicks in 1999.
