This article contains SPOILERS for The Pitt season 2, episode 8.With the cyberattack wreaking havoc on Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, this week’s episode of The Pitt finally brought Dr. Langdon and Dr. Santos together for a contentious reunion. PTMC shut down all its electronic systems at the end of The Pitt season 2, episode 7, and chaos ensued. Now, all the nurses and doctors are stuck using paper charts and orders, and things are only ramping up from here.
The newfound chaos of PTMC didn’t stop The Pitt from introducing new developments for its doctors and new tragedies for its patients, however. By the end of this week’s episode, Dr. Robby had made a confusing choice for one of his patients, Dr. Mohan had made a huge decision about her future, and Ogilvie had made a fool of himself once again.
Why Robby Is Giving Roxie More Morphine In The Pitt Season 2
The Pitt season 2, episode 8 ended with Dr. McKay and Javadi asking Robby for advice on how to deal with Roxie, the cancer patient, and her pain. As they explained, Roxie is already on quite a bit of morphine and oxycontin, and any more would risk killing her. Despite that, Robby told them to prescribe even more morphine. That decision, and Robby’s justification for making it, was a bit confusing.
As Robby explained, he decided to give Roxie more morphine because of the double effect principle of palliative care. Essentially, Robby has decided to give Roxie end of life care. His main goal is treating her pain, not curing her or helping her live longer. If, in treating her pain, the medicine he prescribes ends up ending her life, then that’s not just an acceptable risk, it may be the best outcome for her.
Roxie has terminal cancer. There is no curing her or saving her life. The only thing Robby and the other doctors at PTMC can do for her is make her death less painful. Roxie likely understands this on some level, as she doesn’t want to die in her home. Robby has essentially read between the lines and decided that he’s going to help Roxie die in the hospital with as little pain as possible.
