Grass Lake food service director appointed to state nutrition board leadership role

GRASS LAKE, MI – Kelly Bolton, food service director at Grass Lake Community Schools, has been appointed legislative vice chair of the School Nutrition Association of Michigan.
The organization partners with the United States Department of Agriculture and the Michigan Department of Education to support and administer Michigan’s school breakfast and lunch programs.
Bolton will attend a legislative advocacy trip to Washington D.C., March 6 to 11 with fellow board members and USDA representatives.
During the visit, she will participate in the national legislative conference and meet with state representatives and members of Congress to advocate for policies that would make free school meals a permanent federal law.
Her appointment follows her previous work on projects with the Michigan Department of Education, where she built professional relationships with state leaders and program administrators focused on child nutrition.
The advocacy efforts follow recent action by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who signed legislation supporting Michigan school meals. Research shows that access to free school meals positively impacts students’ financial stability, physical health, mental well-being, and academic performance by providing the fuel and energy necessary for learning.
“We are truly honored to have Kelly represent Michigan in this important work and to contribute to efforts that directly support the health and success of our students,” said Grass Lake Superintendent Nick Angel.
