Massachusetts high school sports playoff highlights for March 4

That leaves just No. 4 Arlington as a top-five seed remaining in the Division 1 boys’ hockey bracket, and the Spy Ponders face No. 12 Archbishop Williams on Thursday (7:30 p.m., Stoneham) to join No. 6 Hingham, No. 7 Pope Francis, and No. 8 SJS in the semifinals.
We also saw Wareham get a new all-time scoring leader, two 1,000-point achievements, and several upsets and thrilling overtime finishes.

▪ Wareham senior Aaron Cote scored 35 points in an 83-67 Division 4 second-round over South Hadley to surpass assistant coach Darien Fernandez’s school record of 1,492 career points. He passed Fernandez on a first-quarter 3-pointer and finished the night with 1,516 points after connecting on nine 3-pointers.
▪ Senior Addy Andrews scored 29 points for Cohasset in a 53-50 Division 4 second-round win at Wahconah, topping the 1,000-point mark for her career.
▪ KIPP Academy senior Viccee Howard eclipsed 1,000 career points by scoring 18 in a 75-54 Division 5 second-round win over Libertas Academy. Howard added 13 rebounds and nine assists as the No. 3 Panthers reached the quarterfinals.
▪ With a 70-46 victory over Longmeadow in the second round of the Division 2 bracket, the Burlington boys’ basketball team broke the program record for wins with its 19th of the season.
▪ With Tuesday’s 68-64 win over Malden Catholic in the second round of the Division 1 tournament, Beverly boys’ basketball coach Matt Karakoudas earned his 200th win. He’s had assistants Jeff Downey and Mike Cronin at his side for all of them. Karakoudas has coached Beverly since 2017, winning 145 games, and spent three years at the former Pope John in Everett.
We already addressed St. John’s 4-3 stunner of top-seeded and defending Division 1 champion Catholic Memorial.
Wednesday also saw No. 12 Cohasett girls’ basketball take down No. 5 Wahconah, 53-50; No. 14 Bishop Feehan boys’ basketball upend No. 3 Needham, 94-87 in quadruple overtime, and No. 6 Methuen/Tewksbury girls’ hockey send No. 3 Algonquin packing, 2-1, in overtime.
See above, as Bishop Feehan’s four-OT win certainly stands as one of the best finishes of the night, as did Sarah Marino’s OT goal to send Methuen/Tewksbury past Algonquin.
No. 3 Dover-Sherborn/Weston boys’ hockey triumphed over 11th-seeded North Reading, 2-1, when Christos Rogaris fired in the winner in the final minute of regulation.
Jorge Bond, Drury — The sophomore went off in a 94-58 drubbing of Avon, scoring 44 points in the Division 5 second-round victory.
Allen Brown Jr., Holbrook — The senior went for 36 points, raising his career total to a staggering 2,271, as he helped the sixth-seeded Bulldogs reach the Division 5 quarterfinals with a 68-48 win over Mt. Everett.
Justin Thibert, Shawsheen — The senior delivered a hat trick in a 7-1 Division 3 quarterfinal win over Norwood.
Sophia Gallivan, North Reading — It was coming up fives for the junior, who finished with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, and 5 blocks in a 57-34 Division 3 second-round win over Old Rochester.
Kiki Lynch, King Philip — The senior posted a 42-save shutout to keep the fifth-seeded Warriors advancing with a 1-0 double-overtime win over No. 4 Pembroke in the Division 2 quarterfinals.
▪ Emerson senior Bri Fongrillo, a Hopedale graduate, was named the NEWMAC Athlete of the Year for women’s basketball. She also collected her third straight All-NEWMAC first team selection by averaging 19.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.4 steals while shooting 40.2 percent from distance. Frongillo finishes her career as Emerson’s career leader in points (1,305), scoring average (20.4), assists (276), and free throw percentage (87.1).
▪ Trinity senior Jarrel Okorougo, a Brimmer and May graduate from Stoneham; Bowdoin sophomore Ray Cuevas, a Pingree graduate from Ipswich; and Wesleyan sophomore Zach Wolinski, a North Andover graduate, were named to the All-NESCAC men’s basketball first team.
Okorougo, a forward, produced 15.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Cuevas, a guard, averaged 22.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists while shooting 45 percent from deep. He was also a NESCAC Player of thet Week after helping the Bantams win their third straight championship. Wolinski, a guard, put up 18.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.
▪ Colby sophomore Dan Civello, a BC High graduate from South Weymouth, made the All-NESCAC men’s basketball second team after posting 18.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game.
▪ Williams sophomore Jake McManus, a Belmont Hill graduate from Winthrop, was named to the All-NESCAC men’s hockey second team after producing eight goals, 17 assists, and 25 points in 25 games.
▪ Colgate freshman Andrew Alekseyenko, a Rivers graduate from Brookline, was named Patriot League men’s basketball Rookie of the Year. The forward started all 31 games and averaged 14.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists. He was a five-time league Rookie of the Week.
▪ Rhode Island College junior Abby Wager, a Mansfield graduate, was named the Little East Conference women’s basketball Defensive Player of the Year. She also made the All-LEC first team and All-Defensive team. Wager, a guard, started all 26 games for the Anchorwomen, averaging 14.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, and 1.9 steals.
▪ Bates junior goalie Andrew Toland, a BC High graduate from Hingham, was named NESCAC men’s lacrosse Player of the Week after he posted 20 stops and a .645 save percentage in a 13-11 upset of No. 6 Wesleyan.
▪ Tufts junior midfielder Schuyler Lloyd, a Pingree graduate from Wenham, was picked as NESCAC women’s lacrosse Player of the Week after netting five goals in a season-opening win over No. 3 Colby.
▪ Wheaton junior Chris Bodnaruk, an Andover graduate, was named NEWMAC men’s lacrosse Face Off Specialist of the Week after winning 15 of 20 draws and picking up six ground balls in a 17-7 win over Saint Joseph. He has a 66.7 winning percentage on the season.
▪ Bucknell junior Colin McLoy, a Pingree graduate from Newburyport, was named Patriot League men’s lacrosse Face Off Specialist of the Week after going 16 for 25 at the X with six ground balls in a 12-11 win over Lehigh. He has a 60.8 win percentage through five games.
▪ Holy Cross freshman Shane McDonnell, a Phillips Exeter graduate from Dedham, was named Patriot League men’s lacrosse honorable mention after going 13 for 16 at the ‘X’ with ground balls in a loss to Army. Lafayette sophomore Benjamin DiBattista, a Belmont Hill graduate from Westwood, was also an honorable mention after scoring four goals in a win over St. John’s. He leads the Patriot League in goals (21).
▪ Keene State senior Andrew Wiegand, a Wachusett graduate from Jefferson, was tabbed Little East Conference Goalkeeper of the Week after posting a 9.27 goals against average and 57.5 save percentage in his first two collegiate starts.
▪ Brandeis senior Garret Rieden, a Littleton graduate, earned All-University Athletic Association indoor track honors for the second year in a row after finishing third in the 800 at the league meet in 1 minute, 54.84 seconds.
