A new, 5,000-square-foot YMCA will be built on the campus of Alabama State University in Montgomery, school officials announced, as part of a larger partnership.
“This partnership between Alabama State University and the YMCA of Greater Montgomery represents more than a shared investment in facilities and programs; it reflects our mutual commitment to uplifting our students and our community,” said Quinton Ross, president of Alabama State University, in a news release.
On Monday, officials with ASU and the YMCA of Greater Montgomery will hold a press conference, marking the start of a partnership between the wellness nonprofit and the university.
Key to the partnership is the new YMCA, which will be built on campus but operated and staffed by the YMCA, according to a news release. It will feature state-of-the-art fitness equipment and provide services for students, faculty, and residents.
In addition, the university and YMCA will partner on youth leadership programs, sports camps, specialized fitness and education classes, and other initiatives.
The partnership will also offer health fairs, service projects, and wellness workshops tailored to local health challenges in the Montgomery region, according to the news release.
“By working together, we are creating spaces and opportunities that will foster health, growth, and strengthen community connections for generations to come. This is Hornet Nation at its best — leading, serving, and transforming lives,” Ross said.
Alabama State University has a 172-acre campus in downtown Montgomery, near the State Capitol. YMCA of Greater Montgomery has 17 locations throughout the greater region, including the Downtown Branch around one mile from the university campus.
