Milton-Ramsbacher win State Four Ball
Max Milton, a sophomore at Polson High School, and Missoula’s Sean Ramsbacher won the Montana State Four Ball Championships that concluded Sunday at Buffalo Hill Golf Course.
Ramsbacher, a standout at Montana Tech from 2017-21, and Milton finished the two-day event at 9-under 135, shooting 68 Saturday and 67 on Sunday.
Sitting two strokes out of first after 18 holes, the duo caught and surpassed three teams: John Morberg and Travis Mays of Buffalo Hill (67 first day, 137 total); Kyle Weaver and Mike Mattson of The Ranch Club and Grady Stinchfield and Nicholas Balcken of Helena (138 total, tied for fourth). Both those pairs shot 66 on Saturday.
Morberg and Mays tied for second with another Buffalo Hill team: Ken Bush and Ryan Santa, who matched Milton and Ramsbacher with a 67 on Sunday.
Finishing sixth were Dan Maher and Sam Krause of Whitefish Lake Golf Club, at 139; seventh at 140 were Glacier High golf team teammates Luke Nelson and Torren Murray.
Big Sky soccer honor for Grizzlies’ Dorak
MISSOULA — Montana goalkeeper Ashlyn Dvorak, who posted shutouts last week of Gonzaga and Washington State, was named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.
The redshirt junior posted career shutouts Nos. 16 and 17 as the Grizzlies (6-2-1) put an emphatic end to some one-sided historical trends.
Montana’s 4-0 win over Gonzaga on Thursday was its first over the Bulldogs since 2014 and its first victory at home over the Zags since 2002.
The Grizzlies’ 1-0 victory over Washington State on Sunday was their first against the Cougars in 14 meetings, their first since 2004.
Sophomore Reagan Brisendine played two-thirds of both games. She had three assists and four shots on goal this season.
UM spiker Batelez lauded for 2nd time
For the second time in three weeks Montana volleyball player Alexis Batezel has been honored by the Big Sky as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week.
The senior libero made it three straight weeks for a UM player to be honored: Gracie Cagle earned Offensive Player of the Week honors last week. That hasn’t happened since 2022.
The libero averaged 4.75 digs per set in two Montana wins and helped the defense keep their opponents to just .158 hitting.
Montana (8-3) has won eight straight matches – its longest streak since 1994 – heading into conference play, which begins Thursday against defending Big Sky champion Sacramento State at Dahlberg Arena.
Oakland Ballers win Pioneer League title
OAKLAND, Calif. — Jake Allgeyer hit a three-run home run in the first inning, Cam Bufford added a three-run shot in the eighth and the Oakland Ballers clinched the Pioneer League championship with an 8-1 win over the Idaho Falls Chukars Sunday.
Bufford hit a three-run home run for the second straight game for the Ballers, who came back from a 2-games-to-none deficit to win the 5-game series; it’s their first title in their second year of existence.
Idaho Falls won the first two at home, 6-4 and 15-10; Oakland won Games 3 and 4, 10-2 and 8-3.
On Sunday the Ballers did it with their bullpen: Noah Millikan lasted three innings, scattering two hits and three walks; four relievers combined to allow just two walks and one hit — a solo home run by the Chukars’ Trevor Rogers in the ninth inning.
