STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Canvas Institute raised approximately $40,000 for youth mental health and empowerment programs at its 4th Annual Youth Empowerment Gala on Saturday. About 220 people attended the event.
The funds raised through ticket sales, pledges, sponsorships and donations will support mental health programs and the organization’s ongoing work across Staten Island.
The money will help bring social-emotional learning to 10 Staten Island public schools and support the development of a Youth Wellness Hub, where young people will be trained and certified in mental health and peer support.
The organization is continuing fundraising efforts through the Diamond Grant awarded by the Staten Island Foundation, which matches every donation two-for-one.
Seven honorees were recognized at the gala for their commitment to youth: Frank “Turtle” Raffaele; Lamson Lam of Exalt Youth; Jessica Jackson, principal of Rocco Laurie IS 72; Nicholas Mele, principal of Edwin Markham IS 51; Taina B. Martinez, MSW, of Baltic Street; Dr. John Piazza, DC, an internationally certified chiropractic sports physician; and Edwina F. Martin, Esq., an attorney and community organizer.
Jackson attended with her husband, mother and members of her school team. Mele was joined by his family and IS 51 staff members. Martinez was introduced by her daughter, Kayla, while Piazza was introduced by his son, Max. Lam sent a video message.
The gala drew support from elected officials including Council Member Kamillah Hanks, Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, Council Member David Carr, Council Member Joseph Borelli, Council Member Anthony Morano, Assemblymember Charles Fall, State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis and Assemblymember Michael Reilly.
Corporate partners supporting the event included NAMI NYC, The Road House Restaurant, Staten Island Performing Provider System, Renu Wellness and BCB Bank, among others. Institutional funders include the Civic Engagement Commission, Citizens Committee of New York City, Staten Island Arts Foundation, NYC Department of Transportation, New York City Public Schools and Northwell Health.
