The first flu-related death of the season in South Carolina recently happened in the Lowcountry, according to state officials.
The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH), said Dec. 3 that the state had suffered its first influenza-associated death of the season, stressing the seriousness of the disease which is circulating throughout communities in the state.
“Preventing the flu is particularly important for people who are at increased risk of complications from the virus, including young children, pregnant women, people 65 and older, and those with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart or lung disease,” a DPH news release said. “However, healthy people also can have serious complications from the flu.”
