EA Sports is going back to school.
The video game company announced Thursday it will release College Football 26 later this year after the massive success of College Football 25 this past season:
College Football 25 marked the return of the iconic franchise for the first time since NCAA Football 14 and brought with it a new twist given the availability of name, image and likeness opportunities in the modern-day sport.
That allowed actual players with true-to-life ratings and appearances to be featured in the game, and the three cover athletes of Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, Michigan running back Donovan Edwards and Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter were all current players.
Hunter went on to win the Heisman Trophy, while Ewers led the Longhorns to the College Football Playoff semifinals after they were featured on the cover. Edwards’ Wolverines made the ReliaQuest Bowl with a 7-5 regular-season record.
With actual players, realistic stadiums that reflected the iconic game-day experiences that define college football and game modes such as Dynasty and Road to Glory, the game was a commercial achievement.
According to the Sports Business Journal, EA Sports College Football 25 became the best-selling sports game of all time that was released in the United States market.
It is a testament to college football’s popularity and the game’s ability to portray the pageantry that makes the sport so special to so many that it was so successful right away. And that also makes it anything but a surprise that it is coming back for a second year.
While there is not an official release date at this point, the game will be available in the summer and ahead of the 2025 college football season.
