ARLINGTON — For the first time since he was head coach of the Cowboys, Jason Garrett covered an NFL game for NBC Sports at AT&T Stadium.
Garrett is part of the NBC crew that broadcast Sunday’s Cowboys-Packers game. Before the game, Garrett spoke with team owner Jerry Jones and also interviewed Jones with Maria Taylor from the NBC set near the field.
“Jason, you opened this stadium, and I really thought we were going to get to a Super Bowl with you,” Jones told Garrett of his feelings when AT&T Stadium opened in 2009. “But I’ll never forget when you opened this stadium and the thrill we had with you coaching the team.”
Of course, the discussion about why the Cowboys traded star pass rusher Micah Parsons came up in the pregame show.
“You’re a Princeton graduate, and proud of it,” Jones said to Garrett in explaining the trade. “One player or five or six players. Now, you say, you got to go get those players. We were able to bring one of them with us when we made the trade. Micah is outstanding and rare, but I believe our best chance for a Super Bowl with Dak Prescott and the makeup of our supporting cast is in the numbers. I’ve always been right, or had the best chance of being right, when the numbers are right.”
Garrett has visited The Star, where the Cowboys practice, numerous times to conduct interviews with players. He even attended the retirement announcement of Zack Martin.
Stadium roof open: For the first time since Dec. 9, 2024, the AT&T Stadium roof was open for a Cowboys’ regular-season game. Coming into the contest, the Cowboys were 2-6 with the roof open and the end zone doors closed. The Cowboys lost to Cincinnati, 27-20, in the last game with the roof open.
A few weeks before that at a Monday night game against the Houston Texans, the roof was scheduled to be open, but a metal plate fell from the roof nearly three hours before kickoff. That prompted the roof to remain closed for that game.
