Fort Worth’s Canyon Ranch spa sets new tone for resort firm

A Canyon Ranch spa that’s opening in Fort Worth is the first of a series of urban health and wellness locations planned by the resort firm.
The exclusive resort and spa operator has previously had destination resorts in Arizona, Nevada, California and Massachusetts.
The new Fort Worth club is part of an effort to bring the storied brand to big-city locations.
The Canyon Ranch Wellness Club will open in the next few weeks as part of Crescent Real Estate’s $250 million mixed-use development in Fort Worth’s Cultural District. The project on Camp Bowie Boulevard includes a luxury hotel, office building and 167 high-end residential units.

Guests at the hotel and Canyon Ranch members will have access to the three-story, more than 20,000-square-foot spa that sets the tone for future locations.
“Since we are headquartered here it made sense to do the first one here,” said John Goff, chairman of developer Crescent Real Estate and Canyon Ranch’s owner. “We are trying to curate the right environment for an urban location.
“This is a way we can do it right in our own backyard.”

The Fort Worth facility is also expected to bring guests to the new Crescent Hotel.
“In so many hotels the workout facility and the spa are an afterthought and second rate,” Goff said. “This will set the hotel apart.”
Canyon Ranch is planning a second urban wellness center to open next year in Houston. And the resort operator is looking at other spots in more than a dozen metro locations.
Canyon Ranch plans to break ground early next year on a sprawling resort outside of Austin.
“It’s going to be the nicest resort in the state,” Goff said. “It’s on 600 acres with two miles of Lake Travis frontage.
“We are also going to have homes there,” he said. “We’ll have something for everybody.”
Canyon Ranch announced this summer that its growth will be funded in part with a major investment from VICI Properties, the New York-based entertainment company that owns Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and other casino and entertainment properties.
VICI Properties is providing $200 million in funding for the Hill Country Canyon Ranch and is also providing new financing for Canyon Ranch’s legacy resorts in Tucson and Lennox, Mass.
The investor is also providing $150 million to fund additional growth.
Canyon Ranch was founded in the 1970s with a single location near Tucson. Crescent Real Estate began investing in the resorts in the 1990s and Goff recently bought the company.
The resorts each year cater to about 20,000 visitors who seek out Canyon Ranch’s custom fitness routines, luxury spa treatments and recreational offerings.
