German hospital drama

Apple TV+ casts its net wide for quality programming, offering plenty of entertainment from distant lands. So why not a German hospital drama? A “gritty” new eight-episode series called Krank Berlin is headed your way soon, the streamer said Tuesday.
Apple offered a deeper description of the “vibrant and dynamic” show, but no air date is set. And will it be in German with English subtitles? We don’t know.
Update: Apple TV+ gave Krank Berlin a boring new title and an air date Wednesday. Now named Berlin ER, the series, which comes to us from a former emergency room doctor, streams with its first two episodes February 26, 2025.
German hospital drama Krank Berlin Berlin ER comes to Apple TV+
Apple TV+ airs shows in shared production from companies in the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Mexico and elsewhere. On Tuesday it mentioned that its partnership with ZDFneo will produce the new German show Krank Berlin (now to be known as Berlin ER on Apple TV+). A former emergency room doctor-turned-screenwriter, Samuala Jefferson, co-created it along with Viktor Jakovleski. It stars Haley Louise Jones (Dear Child, Paradise).
Here’s what to expect, according to Apple TV+:
Managing a chaotic emergency room in the toughest and most overcrowded hospital in Berlin is no small task for the young Dr. Parker (Jones), who is seeking a fresh start in the big city after her private life implodes in Munich. When she tries to implement necessary reforms, Parker is confronted with resistance from the underpaid, ill-equipped and chronically fatigued hospital staff who only survive with an indispensable dose of black humor. But in the face of an increasingly merciless healthcare system, the battered team must put aside their differences and pull together to save lives.
In addition to Jones, the show stars Slavko Popadić (Crooks), Şafak Şengül (Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush), Aram Tafreshian (Dogs of Berlin), Samirah Breuer (The Gryphon), Bernhard Schütz (Barbarians) and Peter Lohmeyer (I don’t work here).
Violet Pictures and Real Film Berlin produce the series for ZDFneo and Apple TV+. Alexis von Wittgenstein (Oktoberfest: Beer & Blood) and Emmy Award-nominated Henning Kamm (Unorthodox) serve as executive producers. Series directors are Alex Schaad (Skin Deep) and Fabian Möhrke (Eichwald, MdB).
