1 Polite trick or treaters — Our Bent Tree North neighborhood in North Dallas had a wonderful Halloween night with virtually all the young people saying “thank you” as they received their goodies. And one particularly enterprising trio of little ladies passed out this note to each home: “There’s hope for this world!”

2 Jerry Jones’ generosity — The contributions made to others through the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Foundation/Dallas Cowboys Charities are impressive: Baylor Scott & White Health, the city of Arlington, Unlocking Doors, North Texas Youth Education Town, the National Medal of Honor Museum and countless others.
On behalf of native Carolinians everywhere, we’d also like to thank Mr. Jones for the hope provided by his charitable gift of Rico Dowdle to the hapless Carolina Panthers. The Oct. 12 game aside, your generosity is greatly appreciated.

3 Competitive kindness — Re: “Clemson fans,” by Perri Brackett, Nov. 1 Letters.
Yeah, I’m responding to my own letter. I had to in hopes that others would do the same and maybe some sort of competitive kindness program among sports fans would start.
So, I took my own advice and welcomed each and every Miami fan I saw before, during and even after the Southern Methodist University-Miami game. I thanked them for coming and shook hands.
Each time, it was received with a smile and a thank-you back. Some acted surprised, most just smiled back and thanked me. There was a bit of trash talk that was funny and friendly.
It was very fun and made the day even better with the SMU win. Even after the game I chanced it, thanking the Miami fans for coming and most congratulated me on the win. True story!
I learned a wonderful lesson and while the game was great fun, being welcoming to the visiting team was the cherry on the sundae! Try it with a smile and you’ll get one back or pay it forward as they say. Pony up!
