While not a league champion yet — the Cod Cod School Boy Golf Championship takes place Friday — St. John Paul II will be in contention after recording a school-record score of 224 to beat Sandwich and Mashpee in a tri meet at Quashnet Valley Country Club on Thursday, powered by Ryan Amerault’s 1-under-par 35.
It was the largest Thursday night slate of the season thus far, with a dozen games across the Commonwealth. Some highlights:
The finish of the night came from Easthampton’s 24-22 win over Holyoke, which trailed 24-16 before driving down and scoring on a 1-yard plunge by Jesus Morales with a minute to play. But Easthampton’s defense stood tall, out-racing quarterback Devin Velez to the pylon on the 2-point converstion attempt to preserve the win.
Newton North also required a fourth-quarter goal-line stand to defeat Needham, 12-7, thanks to 171 passing yards from Freddy Torcasio and 101 rushing yards and the winning touchdown from Dylan Leone.
Senior Dom Renzoni scored five touchdowns for West Boylston in a 39-20 win over Millbury; Mashpee senior Daniel Alade ran for 184 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries in a 36-26 come-from-behind win over Carver; Lynn English QB Shane Knowlton-Simard ran for 208 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 72 yards and two scores in a 46-30 win over Malden; and Charlie Patrick and Paul McGrath hooked up on a pair of TD passes for Holliston in a 28-6 win over Hopkinton as Austin Rodenhiser and Max Mauro combined for 150-plus rushing yards and two scores.
▪ Shrewsbury girls’ volleyball secured its first Mid-Wach A conference title with a 3-0 win over Grafton that saw senior captain Gracie Hester record her 1,000th assist, becoming the second player in program history to reach the threshold.
▪ Boston Latin girls’ soccer defeated Westford, 2-0, marking the Wolfpack’s first win over the Ghosts in program history. Goals were delivered by junior Nina Sly and sophomore Elisa Walker.
▪ While clinching a 26th consecutive tournament appearance for Melrose girls’ volleyball with a 3-1 Middlesex win over Arlington, coach Scott Celli earned his 500th career victory. “Hitting 500 is really nice,” said Celli. “It allows me to remember all of the great players that have come through the program who have contributed along the way.”
▪ Senior forward Julianna Casucci scored twice in Uxbridge field hockey’s 5-0 win over Sutton, her 100th and 101st career goals. She is second in school history behind former teammate Ellie Bouchard, who graduated with 127.
▪ In Monday’s golf meet at DW Field Golf Course in Brockton, Cardinal Spellman junior Gavin Donovan recorded a hole-in-one on the 211-yard, par-3 fifth hole.
Cape Cod Tech will host a first-of-its-kind regional student training “Addressing Hate in School Sports” on Thursday.
The training, developed and led by Northeastern’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society, is part of a local initiative “Shut Out Hate,” designed to foster inclusive, respectful, and safe school sports enviroments. It is being conducted with the MIAA and Massachusett’s Attorney General’s office.
“High school sports are one of the most visible and unifying aspects of school culture,” said Cape Cod Tech principal Billy Terranova. “By bringing educators and student leaders together to confront hate and bias directly, we’re working to ensure that our playing fields, and of course our schools, reflect the values of respect, belonging, and community that our students deserve.”
Schools registered include Falmouth, Wareham, Barnstable, and Dennis-Yarmouth. For more information contact Terranova at 508-432-4500 ext. 2000 or bterranova@capetech.us
A similar two-day seminar will be held in Franklin Dec. 5-6.
Boston’s newest soccer tradition is slated for Saturday, Oct. 18, as Boston Latin School and Boston Latin Academy will face off in a soccer doubleheader that will feature a guest appearance from Legacy FC coach Filipa Patão.
The boys will play at 4:30 p.m. at Clemente Field, followed by the girls at 6:30 p.m. This is the first time the school’s boys’ and girls’ teams have played back-to-back.
