Medical Examiner ID’s Man Fatally Shot by Minnesota State Trooper

Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News)- The man fatally shot by a Minnesota State Trooper on I-94 in Minneapolis early Monday morning has been identified.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety released a statement Monday confirming that a trooper fired their service weapon at a motorist who was reported to have attempted to flee a traffic stop that was initiated around 1:50 a.m. The fatal officer-involved shooting happened in the westbound lanes of the freeway near 42nd Ave. in north Minneapolis.

A news release issued by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office Tuesday identified the motorist as 33-year-old Ricky Thomas Cobb II. The report says the Plymouth man’s death was caused by multiple gunshot wounds.

The Department of Public Safety statement says troopers were attempting to pull Cobb II out of his car after learning he had an active felony arrest warrant out of Ramsey County. He was originally pulled over for having no operational tail lights on his vehicle.
Three State Troopers have been placed on administrative leave, per State Patrol policy. Officials say body-worn cameras and squad cameras were activated during the course of this incident.
The Minnesota BCA is investigating the fatal use of force incident.
