Mental health rises in New Year’s resolution subjects for 2025

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Are you a firm believer in making New Year’s resolutions for your emotional well-being? If so, you may be among a recent rise in hopeful goal-setters.
The American Psychiatric Association reports that 33% of people around the country are making mental health promises into 2025. This is a 5% increase from 2024 and the highest since polling first began in 2021.
The increase applies to audiences between ages 18-34, with 48% reporting inner health resolutions, focusing on physical fitness, meditation, nature focuses, spirituality, therapy, social media breaks, psychiatry or using mental health apps.
The idea of resolutions is still popular across the board, with 81% of people making any general New Year’s resolution.
The study received physical fitness, finance, social, relationships, diet and spirituality as the top five overall resolutions.
The study also reviewed mood checks headed into 2025. 67% of the 2,220 surveyed said excellent or good, 25% fair and 7% poor. Older people were more likely to vote good or excellent.
The second highest concern for Americans was uncertainty of the next year.
Experts say it is important to check in on mental health concerns any time of the year, but especially at the start of a new one, which can renew previous concerns or create new ones.
“Society has really taken a look at mental health and continues to do that, understanding that connection between physical and mental health. Being able to look at that and say what worked well in this situation and what could have been better. That could be an opportunity to set a goal,” Medical University of South Carolina Doctor Edward Lewis said.
