RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has opened a new labor and delivery unit in Northeast Columbia, marking a significant step in expanding maternal care services in the Midlands.
Matthew Medley, chief operating officer for MUSC’s Midlands Division, said a community needs assessment informed the decision to restore labor and delivery services to the area.
“MUSC Midlands division, we did a needs assessment for this community, and we identified that there was a serious opportunity to bring world-class OB [obstetric] care right here to the Columbia community,” Medley said.
Dr. Todd Kramer, with Kramer Women’s Care, explained that the new facility addresses a long-standing gap in care.
