CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Medical University of South Carolina’s Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital has been named second in the nation for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery.
MUSC’s status is a jump from the past two years when they placed fourth in the U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Children’s Hospital rankings.
“We are proud of our No. 2 national ranking. It is well-deserved and demonstrates that the families in South Carolina and the entire Southeast region have access to some of the best pediatric care in the nation,” Mark A. Scheurer, M.D., MUSC chief of Children’s and Women’s Services, said. “Providing care for a complex heart patient requires a comprehensive team, and this remarkable accomplishment indicates that Cardiology and Heart Surgery, along with our other subspecialty programs, are consistently performing at the highest level.”
The hospital’s Health Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center also held steady at first place in patient outcomes.
Officials say this is the children’s hospital’s 17th consecutive year placing among the top hospitals.
That placement is based on patient survival rate after complex heart surgeries, the number of specialized staff and their level of expertise, the availability of specialized services and advanced technology and the hospital’s infection prevention.
In addition to that second place ranking in cardiology and heart surgery, the children’s hospital also ranked 24th in nephrology, 30th in gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery and 38th in cancer treatment.
“The recognition from U.S. News & World Report begins with our dedicated care team members at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, who continue to deliver exceptional care to our patients and their families,” Patrick J. Cawley, M.D., MUSC Health CEO and executive vice president for Health Affairs, University, said. “Our team is committed to using the most advanced tools to foster innovation and produce exceptional outcomes for our youngest patients.”
