More than 800,000 people in New Jersey receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — SNAP — benefits, and while DoorDash, Instacart and other delivery services are offering deals for people on SNAP, your local supermarket will not be able to offer you any SNAP-only deals, a development that could further pinch your budget.
Here’s why.
Are grocery stores offering SNAP-only deals?
Industry watcher Progressive Grocer confirmed the U.S. Department of Agriculture cannot provide SNAP-only discounts during the pause in SNAP funding caused by the ongoing federal government shutdown.
Published reports indicate President Donald Trump won’t budge on SNAP payments until the shutdown is settled. This comes after a federal judge ordered Trump to pay SNAP benefits from the country’s contingency fund.
According to The Hill, the agriculture department warned grocers against the practice through an alert on its website and via a direct email.
