ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – A South Carolina family have received a major payout after a loved one died following a visit to an Orangeburg medical facility.
Earline Brunson was admitted to Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties in May of 2021 and later to Orangeburg Post Acute. A lawsuit filed by her family alleges the staff was inattentive to her condition and “failed to provide adequate skin management measures.”
As a result, Brunson’s family says she developed pressure sores and suffered, “horrific, painful, disfiguring, permanent and life-threatening injuries which caused great pain and suffering.”
Among other things, the lawsuit alleges the staff was not trained properly and failed to care for Brunson. She died in August.
Initially, Regional Medical Center denied the claims in the lawsuit. However, in the settlement agreement, the family was awarded $125,000.
The Medical University of South Carolina bought out Regional Medical Center two years after this incident. A representative for MUSC says they don’t comment on legal matters that happened before the buyout.
The settlement is being paid out by the state’s Insurance Reserve Fund.
