🏀Game of the Night
Trailing by one point with one minute left didn’t bother the Davies girls basketball team.
After you’ve spent an entire afternoon being behind on the scoreboard, you get used to it.
The Patriots dug themselves out of an early hole and, with under four minutes left against Central, tied the game and later took its first lead. The Knights took it back, but with 52 seconds left, Shayla DaRosa’s free throws gave the Patriots the lead for good before an offensive putback by Jayla DePina gave them some breathing room in a 35-31 win.
For two-and-a-half quarters, the game of Division III contenders belonged to Central. The Knights never trailed, scoring the final four points of the first quarter to take an 8-4 lead before going into halftime up 20-14.
A Keeana Palmer 3-pointer extended the lead to nine and, after a bucket by Davies’ Aniyah Gomes, Raynelis Rivas made a pair of free throws that had Central up 25-16 with 3:29 left in the third quarter.
Davies woke up after that. Gomes sandwiched a jumper by Kylie Robert with four points to cut the deficit to 25-22 heading to the fourth. The slow battle back continued and with 3:48 left to play, Jayline Brito Silva’s offensive putback tied the game for the first time since it was 4-4 in the first quarter.
Central went back ahead 29-26 after a free throw and layup from Rivas, but Gomes scored on two layups in a 24-second span to give Davies its first lead of the game at 30-29 with 1:47 remaining.
The Knights responded, as Angeiris Garcia Pena hit a fadeaway jumper to give her team a 31-20 edge with 65 seconds left to play. On the Patriots’ ensuing possession, DaRose was fouled and she calmed stepped to the line to make both free throws. Davies got a stop on the next possession and a layup by DePina made it 34-31 with 17 seconds to go.
The Patriots came up with one final stop and Gomes was fouled, making her first free throw before intentionally missing the second with the four-point lead.
Gomes had a terrific game, scoring 17 points for Davies. DaRosa and DePina both finished with five points and Brito Silva added four.
Eveisha Santana played through foul trouble and led Central with 10 points. Rivas scored nine in the loss and Palmer had seven.
🏀GIRLS BASKETBALL — Division I
Ponaganset 58, South Kingstown 32
The Chieftains were shorthanded but it didn’t matter much, as Javiana Stec and Malia Ellis took the reins on offense and the defense dominated in a 58-32 win over the Rebels.
Ponaganset played without All-Stater Marron Nerney and freshman sensation Maci Lafontaine, but the rest of the roster stepped up in their absence – it just took a while to get going.
South Kingstown jumped out to a 13-12 lead in the first quarter, but the Chieftains locked down on defense the rest of the way and gave up single-digit points in the remaining three quarters. Ellis, Kaitlyn Simoneau and Zoey Thorp handled most of the scoring in the second quarter, putting Ponaganset up 27-19 at half. Ellis continued to find success on offense in the second half and Stec did most of her damage in the final two quarters as the Chieftains ran away with the win.
Stec finished her night with 16 points, scoring 12 in the second half. Ellis had 15 points and Thorp nearly got to double figures, putting up nine points. Giuliana Bachini added six in the win.
Chloe Quirk led SK with seven points and Abbie O’Rourke and Caroline Cavanagh both had six in the loss.
Portsmouth 50, La Salle 40
The Patriots meant business from the start and showed it, dominating the opening eight minutes in their 50-40 win over the Rams.
Portsmouth showed up and executed with precision, getting 24 points in the first quarter and never letting La Salle back in the game. Gyselle Mairs did most of the damage, scoring a game-high 21 points. Violet Silvia added 18 in the win.
For the Rams, Sophia Caparco scored nine points in the loss.
Westerly 67, Chariho 23
Freshman Santanaa Hamelin got the Bulldogs off and running and they never looked back from their fast start in a 67-23 win over the Chargers.
Westerly dictated tempo from the jump and Hamelin, the point guard, was instrumental in their success. The freshman scored nine points in the opening eight minutes, helping the Bulldogs take a 27-3 lead at the end of the first quarter before they washed, rinsed and repeated it the rest of the night.
Fellow freshman Macy Antoch finished as Westerly’s top scorer with 18 points, scoring 15 in the first half. Hamelin and Ella Reyes both scored 14 and Madison Chiaradio – another freshman – scored six. Menuki Harris was the top scorer for Chariho with five points.
Barrington 63, Bay View 32
Led by Genesis Castro, who scored a team-best 14 points, the Eagles raced out to a 22-5 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
Maggie Ornstedt added 11 points and Ella Martin had 10 in the win, pushing Barrington’s record to 11-1.
For the Bengals Lailah Valles scored a game-high 19 points in the loss.
🏀GIRLS BASKETBALL — Division II
North Smithfield 42, Hope 26
The Northmen used size to their advantage, shutting down the Blue Wave offense and using a big third quarter to get the separation needed to pull out the 42-26 win.
Defense has been a strength for North Smithfield, which boasts one of the tallest teams in Division II. That size proved to be too much for Hope to handle, as the Blue Wave could only muster single-digit points in each of the four quarters.
The Northmen couldn’t take advantage early thanks to offensive struggles of their own in the first half. Things changed coming out of the locker room as seven different players scored in the 15-point third quarter before putting the finishing touches on the win.
Eight different players scored for North Smithfield, led by 12 from Abbie Perry. A 3-pointer helped Savannah Robbins score seven and Alex Leroux added six in the win.
Brithany Urizar was the game’s top scorer, putting up 16 in the loss for Hope.
Mt. Hope 54, East Greenwich 48
Lilly DaSilveira impressed from start to finish – especially from the free-throw line – as the Huskies put the Avengers in a hole they couldn’t dig out from in the 54-48 win.
DaSilveira has been a beast for Mt. Hope all winter and this was no exception. The senior scored eight points – making 4-for-4 free throws – in the first quarter, a sign of things to come, as the Huskies led 21-8. The teams played to a stalemate in the second before East Greenwich got the deficit into single digits heading to the fourth quarter.
But DaSilveira made sure the lead stuck, scoring seven points – including an emphatic and-one – to secure the victory.
DaSilveira put up a game-high 30, making a perfect 11-for-11 from the free-throw line. Catherine Frawley was in double figures, scoring 12 points, and Hailey Ferreira added seven in the win.
Evelyn David put on a display in the fourth quarter trying to get EG back into the game. She scored nine of her 11 points in those final eight minutes and tied for team-high in points with Quinlan Darcey.
Lincoln 47, North Providence 35
The Lions’ defense roared in the first three quarters and Molly Comtois and Brielle Lambert handled the bulk of the scoring in the 47-35 taming of the Cougars.
Defense was the name of the first quarter, as Lincoln opened to an 8-6 lead on North Providence. The Lions continued to torment the Cougars over the final two quarters, holding them to four points in the second quarter and nine in the third.
The Lincoln offense was persistent. Lambert hit two 3-pointers in the second quartet to make things more comfortable at 21-10 and in the third, Carly Fraize and Lambert both scored five to put things out of reach. Comtois and Techar Tarponweh both added buckets in the fourth to take any drama out.
Comtois finished with 14 points for Lincoln and Lambert was up there with 13. Fraize had eight points in the win.Mariana Xavier scored all 11 of her points in the fourth quarter to lead North Providence.
Smithfield 56, Narragansett 45
The Sentinels used a balanced and consistent offensive attack to withstand a big performance from Mariners’ star Delaney Bonneau in a 56-45 win.
Smithfield has a star of its own in Annabelle Lally, who provided the offensive punch to help withstand Bonneau’s barrage for Narragansett. The Sentinels led by four at halftime and opened in up the second half before closing down smooth.
Annabelle Lally scored a team-high 16 points, Elaina Reed had 11 and five others made the scoresheet to push the Sentinels up in the RPI standings
It was a big game in defeat for Bonneau, who scored 21. Narragansett also got contributions from five others in the loss and made seven 3-poitners along the way.
🏀GIRLS BASKETBALL — Division III
Burrillville 47, Mount Pleasant 38
The Broncos looked to be in control all night before things got a little uncomfortable in the fourth quarter before holding on for the 47-38 win over the Kilties.
Brooke Lambert got Burrillville off to the start it wanted, hitting a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter before Mackenzie Stone became a scorer in the second. The Broncos led 29-15 at halftime and looked good, but Mount Pleasant’s Leanni Johnson had other ideas. The junior went on a scoring binge and got the deficit to 11 at the end of the third and with the Burrillville offense struggling in the fourth, helped get it to single digits before the Kilties ran out of steam.
Stone had a nice night, scoring 15 points for the Broncos. Lambert finished with 12, hitting three 3-pointers. Sofia Belluzzi scored seven points and Mackenzie Lafleur finished with six.
Johnson was the game’s top scorer, putting up 18 points for Mount Pleasant. Jyrae King was also in double figures with 11 points.
Cranston East 58, Achievement First 23
The Thunderbolts got the performance they were looking for all season long, getting the job done on both end of the court to beat the Falcons, 58-23, for their first win of the season.
It’s been a tough start to the season for Cranston East, which took it out on Achievement First with a strong defensive effort that prevented scoring early and any sort of comeback. Ceanaa Tuazon finished as the Thunderbolts’ top scorer, putting up 12 points in the win.
Silvy Mustafa reached double figures for the Falcons, scoring 10 in the loss.
Times2 57, Paul Cuffee 9
Hadiya Jenkins had a night to remember as the Eagles controlled the game from start to finish in a 57-9 win over the Navigators.
Jenkins, a senior, had the best game of her career. She posted 40 points and nearly had a triple double with her dominance on defense and on the glass. Jenna Jennings added 13 points in the win and Maylin Hilario accounted for the rest of the scoring.
Pilgrim 29, Toll Gate 14
The Battle for Warwick didn’t have an offensive fireworks, but the Patriots’ defensive masterpiece got the job done in a 29-14 win.
Pilgrim scored 13 points in the opening quarter – thanks to nine from softball stars Skylar Hawes and Madison Tuirok – and didn’t need much more thanks to its defense. Leading 13-8, the Patriots gave up one point in the second quarter and pitched a shutout in the third before Toll Gate put up five in the fourth.
The Patriots did what they had to do on offense. Natalie Fratus reached double figures with a 10-point night, with Hawes scoring six, Tuirok five and Leah Shea added four. Avery Marques and Avery Costable both had a bucket in the win.
Toll Gate’s Eddy sisters – Addie and Aria – both scored five in the loss.

Barrington 89, Johnston 51
The Eagles were more than happy to play at the pace the Panthers wanted, using every weapon in their arsenal to race to an 89-51 win.
Barrington knew Johnston was riding high after its overtime win Wednesday, but took all momentum away with a stuffy defensive performance and some sharp shooting from Colin Appleyard who hit two 3-pointers to help give his team a 20-8 lead.
The Panthers sped up play in the second, but the Eagles went faster. Ryan Rigamonti and Caleb Satisfield helped Barrington withstand a barrage from Mike Morsilli to take a 42-28 lead into the locker room. The Rams made the trip to Connecticut worth it, as Maddox DeBonise turned up his game in the fourth quarter and helped them close out with a 61-49 win over the Saints.
The first half against St. Bernard’s School was a grind and La Salle fought back to take a three-point lead into the fourth quarter. It was all DeBonise from there, as the sophomore scored 12 of his game-high 21 points, helping the Rams outscored St. Bernard’s 20-11.
