Heritage outlasted Detroit Catholic Central, rallying in the second half to earn a 64-62 boys basketball win Saturday at Detroit Catholic Central.
Catholic Central led 31-29 at halftime before Heritage slowly overtook the Shamrocks to improve to 4-1.
Jaylin Cooper led the Hawks with 17 points, five assists and four steals, while Noah Arnold posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Isaiah Burton followed with 13 points and four steals, while Aiden Lindsey scored 11 points.
Girls Basketball
Detroit Renaissance 49, Heritage 48 (OT)
In a matchup between two of the top girls basketball teams from last season, Renaissance shut out Heritage in overtime to snare the one-point win Saturday in the Best of Michigan Classic at Belleville. Alesia Ode scored 18 points to lead Heritage, with Jayla Laster scoring 16 and Josie Ode six.
Menominee 50, Freeland 45
Joz Begick scored 19 points with eight rebounds to lead Freeland in the loss. Braelyn Rytlewski followed with 14 points and nine rebounds, with Katie Niederquell scoring 10 points.
Tecumseh 55, Midland High 39
Defending Division 2 state champion Tecumseh took a 25-16 lead on its way to a win in the Best of Michigan Classic at Belleville. Ella McLaughlin led the Chemics with 11 points, followed by Jensyn Ardouin with 10 points and four rebounds. Kaiya Mahabir chipped in with eight points six rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Ellee Arnold added seven points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.
Wrestling
Brighton Team Duals
Freeland posted a 3-2 record at the Brighton Team Duals with wins over Greenville (35-29), Napoleon (68-12) and Jackson Northwest (45-25). The Falcons lost to state powers Grand Ledge (39-36) and Eaton Rapids (52-18). Preston Wetherell led Freeland with a major decision and three pins, including the Falcons’ fastest pin of the night at 34 seconds. Michael Wilson earned five wins for Freeland, with Wetherell, Nolan Cunningham, Colton Winchell and Easton Rosebush adding four wins each.
St. Louis Duals
Frankenmuth went 4-1 with its lone loss coming to St. Louis, which is ranked third in the state. Frankenmuth defeated Chesaning (60-12), Ionia (66-18), Saranac (52-24) and Fulton (66-18) before losing to St. Louis (47-24). Frankenmuth’s Colton Whittaker was named the Most Valuable Wrestler of the event, posting a 5-0 record that included a 6-5 win over defending state champion Owen Fogel. Frankenmuth’s other undefeated wrestlers included Jensen Antilla, Bradyn Curtis, E.J. Bernthal, Michael Carter, Griffin Clontz and Cade Olgine. St. Louis was undefeated with wins over Frankenmuth, Chesaning (63-12), Ionia (69-12), Saranac (71-6) and Fulton (80-0). Undefeated wrestlers for St. Louis included Rudy Clapp, Alex Rodriguez, Cole Grollimunc, Laythan Haworth, Drew Challender and Carson Zacharko.
Hartland Duals
Midland High was 2-3 at the Hartland Duals with wins over Kalamazoo Loy Norrix (47-27) and Traverse City Central (52-26). The Chemics lost to Hartland (65-12), Fenton (63-18) and Flushing (54-24). Eamon Murray and Noah Anderson were undefeated for Midland High.
Boys Bowling
Alma 23, Freeland 7
Sawyer Prast bowled the high games for Freeland earning points with games of 176 and 164. Braden Hasse added a 170 for the Falcons.
Girls Bowling
Freeland 25, Alma 5
After winning the Baker’s Matches, Freeland put the win away in the Peterson games. Rachel Svetic led the Falcons with games of 134 and 127, while Madalyn Favara added a 129.
