Steward Health Care board nodded while company burned

Nun’s presence on board of directors raises a few questions
Re “At Steward, silence from the boardroom” (Spotlight Team, Page A1, Oct. 6): I am a Fall River-area Catholic, long active in charity and justice work focused on the most vulnerable among us. Thus I was stunned and deeply disturbed to learn, in last Sunday’s front-page expose of the utter failure of the Steward Health Care board of directors, that one of its longtime board members is a Dominican Sisters of the Presentation nun, who also happens to have been a longtime board chair of St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River.
It seems Sister Vimala Vadakumpadan would traditionally open Steward board meetings with reflective prayer. All of us, Catholic or not, must wonder just what the board members were reflecting on and whether Vadakumpadan spoke out strongly during those meetings against the abuses — moral, ethical, and possibly legal — that were right before her eyes. If she did, it seems clear that none of her fellow board members listened.
