Mariner senior Angel Cruz defended his cross country title and set a new course record at the Class 3A-Region 3 championship.
The Fort Myers High boys cross country team, led by a strong pack of upperclassmen, secured the region title.
Dozens of student-athletes from Collier and Lee County schools signed letters of intent to play sports at the collegiate level.

WEDNESDAY
Cross Country
REGION 3A-3: Angel Cruz was a man on a mission. The Mariner senior not only wanted to defend his Region 3 cross country title, but he wanted to take down the course record at Buckingham Park. The Fightin’ Triton did both at the Class 3A-Region 3 cross country championship.
On a cool, crisp Wednesday morning, Cruz bolted to the front with Gabriel Garcia of Tampa Jesuit in hot pursuit.
“I kept pushing my foot on the gas a little more, every minute or so because I knew the kid was right on my back,” said Cruz
Cruz kept applying the pressure, breaking Garcia over the last 400 meters to defend his title and smash the course record by 12 seconds.
“I’m more happy about the course record than being the champion, honestly. I wanted this course record for so long,” Cruz said.
While Cruz and Garcia battled, it looked like the Jesuit team had control of the team title, but the boys of Fort Myers High said not so fast.
Behind team leaders Reed Hagen and Trae Britton, a group of Green Wave upperclassmen were forming a tight pack just outside the top 10. That pack led by senior Colton Barry would lift Fort Myers to the region title.
“I think that speaks to how they feel about each other. They like to train together and feed off each other and sometimes that can be looked at as a crutch, but sometimes it can be looked at as an advantage,” Green Wave coach Bob Berkey said of his squad.
The girls’ race was a different story. Lydia Vincent of Zephyrhills looked like she was shot out of a cannon at the start and was never pressured as she ran to the individual win.
The real question was which team could run to the team title. The Green Wave girls had hopes of taking the title but were wary of last year’s region champ Osceola.
It turned out that another team in green, the St. Petersburg Green Devils were the team to beat. With junior Caitlin Williams taking second, St. Petersburg put their next four girls in front of Fort Myers’ fourth girl, giving St. Pete the team title by 19 points.
The Green Wave led by the fifth-place finish by senior Maggie Pocklington were happy to stamp their ticket to Tallahassee.
“I’m so happy and excited because all of our girls have worked so hard. Most of our team is freshmen so I’m really proud of everyone, they’ve improved so much,” Pocklington said.
“Senior Maggie Pocklington has been a rock for us all season, and we kind of knew that coming in. The freshmen girls, the first timers like Gianna, Elizabeth, Megan and Kayden, they’ve really just glomed onto that vibe, that energy,” said Berkey.
