The 77th Primetime Emmys awarded the most prestigious category of the night to HBO medical series “The Pitt” for Outstanding Drama Series.
Series creator John Wells gave a special thanks to health care workers and first responders who inspired the harrowing medical drama.
The series, which stars Noah Wyle in his role as Dr. Michael “Robby” Rabinavitch, highlights the chaos of an emergency room, much like Wyle’s breakout series “E.R.” for which he was nominated five times but never won. He broke that streak Sunday, winning for his critically acclaimed performance on “The Pitt.”
Each episode of the series portrays one hour of the same stressful shift at a Pittsburgh hospital, whose staff tackle everything from abortion rights to mass shootings.
The medical drama, which was renewed for a second season just one month after the series debuted in January, amassed 13 Emmy nominations this year.
In a statement to People, Wyle said he was “overjoyed that the nominations were spread across all the different departments as it reflects our collective effort. A heartfelt congrats to all my fellow nominees. I’m humbled and grateful.”
“The Pitt’s” nominations included Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and nominations for nominations for directing, writing, sound editing, and casting.
