MARPLE TOWNSHIP, PA — Marple Township Police were led on a vehicle chase that extended into Haverford Township last week after investigating thefts at a local gym.
The incident started at about 5:51 p.m. Thursday. Police said officers were surveilling Planet Fitness, 2920 Springfield Road in Broomall, due to a theft occurring there the night before. Police said a person run from the facility and get into a blue Jeep Grand Cherokee that left the parking lot, heading south on Springfield Road, police said.
Officers tried to stop the vehicle near South Sproul Road and West Chester Pike, but the Jeep turned right at West Chester Pike and sped off, according to authorities. The Jeep drove into Haverford Township, with police reporting it violated man traffic laws.
Police said the Jeep turned left onto Lawrence Road, left onto Eagle Road, then right onto Haverford Road, all while driving around other vehicles and ignoring traffic laws. Authorities suspended the chase at about 5:59 p.m., and the vehicle was last seen turning left onto Remington Road from Haverford Avenue.
Police said on Tuesday, Jan. 22, thefts from a locker at the same Planet Fitness were reported. A 37-year-old woman from Philadelphia has been identified as a person of interest in the theft. Authorities said police were aware of the above Jeep due to its connections to other thefts from gym facilities in the region.
