Ticks In Illinois Have Rare Disease That Can Cause Health Issues

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has announced the discovery of the first tick in Illinois to test positive for a rare disease-causing bacteria.

Ehrlichia muris eauclairensis (EME) is a bacteria transmitted through the bite of blacklegged ticks that can cause human ehrlichiosis, a severe tick-borne disease that, if untreated, can result in serious health complications.

Health officials conducting routine surveillance collected The tick in Lake County on May 17, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently confirmed the bacteria’s presence, according to a press release from the IDPH.
IDPH Urges Vigilance Against Tickborne Illnesses
IDPH is now urging healthcare providers, especially in Northern Illinois, to be alert for signs of the disease caused by deer tick bites.
While ehrlichiosis caused by EME has only been identified in Wisconsin and Minnesota, this discovery marks its first appearance in Illinois, potentially expanding the disease’s range.

According to the press release, ehrlichiosis can be effectively treated with antibiotics, but it requires early detection to prevent severe illness. Common symptoms of the disease include fever, sweats, chills, muscle aches, and nausea.

Expanding Awareness Ahead of Tickborne Disease Conference
The discovery of a rare disease caused by deer ticks comes just days before the 2024 Illinois Tickborne Disease Conference, set for October 22 in Champaign, Illinois.

The event, hosted by IDPH, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, and the Illinois Lyme Association, will bring together experts to discuss tickborne diseases, evidence-based treatment, and prevention strategies.
Steps to Prevent Tick Bites
As tick activity increases, IDPH advises residents to take precautions when spending time outdoors.
These tips include walking in the center of trails, wearing light-colored clothing, using EPA-registered insect repellents, and performing regular tick checks on family members and pets.
