Federal officials were investigating outbreaks of botulism linked to ByHeart infant formula, which has hospitalized 13 infants across 10 states, including one from Arizona, according to the CDC’s website.
During interviews with caregivers, all reported feeding their infants ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula in the month before symptoms appeared, the CDC said.
Tests revealed the presence of Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that, when ingested, can colonize a baby’s large intestine and produce toxins.
In response, ByHeart announced a voluntary recall of two batches of its ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula after being notified of the investigation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, according to a statement released by the company.
