Enzo Maresca was referring to disagreements with Chelsea’s medical department over the management of Reece James with his worst 48 hours comments according to Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol.
Chelsea and Maresca parted ways on Thursday just 18 months into a five year contract, and six months after he guided them back into the Champions League and won the Conference League and Club World Cup.
Things had been simmering away behind the scenes for a while, but it’s clear they reached the point of no return after Tuesday’s draw with Bournemouth.
Real meaning behind Enzo Maresca 48 hour comments revealed
The first we publicly knew of internal issues for Maresca at Chelsea was after the win against Everton in December.
Maresca stated the previous 48 hours had been his worst since he joined the club, with it unclear at the time what exactly he meant.
People speculated, but now that he’s left his position, Sky Sports reporter Solhekol has revealed what Maresca was referring to.
He took to X.com and said:
“Meanwhile, the mystery of what Maresca was talking about with his “worst 48 hours” comments can be solved once and for all.
“Maresca was talking about disagreements with the Chelsea medical department about managing the minutes played by Reece James.”
It’s strange because most Chelsea fans would say he managed James well and built his minutes and fitness up very carefully.
James’ longest injury free period in a number of years, came under Maresca’s management, but clearly the medical staff felt he shouldn’t have been playing as much.
Liam Rosenior the favourite
With Maresca gone attention now turns to once again appointing a new manager, and it seems clear who that will be.
Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior is said to be leading the race, with some reports suggesting he could be in charge as early as Wednesday’s game against Fulham.
BlueCo need to find a new manager for Strasbourg, which could cause a hold up, but barring anything going wrong it would seem pretty certain Rosenior will be the next man in the Stamford Bridge hot seat.
