Finding a partner who truly understands your world and stands by you through its ups and downs is a dream for many. For Swiss tennis star Belinda Bencic, it’s a beautiful reality. On an incredible run at the Australian Open this year—her first Grand Slam since becoming a mom—Bencic isn’t doing it alone. By her side, every step of the way, is her boyfriend and biggest supporter, Martin Hromkovic. But Martin isn’t just any partner; he’s a pillar of strength for Bencic both on and off the court. So, what makes their bond so special, and how does he help Bencic shine brighter than ever?
The Swiss tennis sensation will play against Japanese star Naomi Osaka in the third round of the Australian Open on Friday. Her boyfriend, meanwhile, will be there in the box to support him, not just as a partner but also as her fitness trainer, who has been working with Bencic for quite some time now. But do you know, that Hromkovic himself hails from an athletic background?
Belinda Bencic’s Slovakian boyfriend donned a professional football career for over 17 years. He represented several famous teams during his career like the FK Inter Bratislava, OFC Russel Gabčíkovo, FK Slovan Duslo Šaľa, FC Družstevník Báč, MFK Vítkovice, FC Eilenburg, and ŠK Senec. But in 2019, he decided to quit the sport and become a fitness coach for his partner, Bencic.

The couple’s romantic journey began in November 2018 and they haven’t looked back since then. Bencic and Hromkovic took their relationship to the next level when the tennis star took to her Instagram account to announce her pregnancy. The couple was seen holding a pair of baby shoes, to which Bencic captioned, “Expecting our little miracle soon! We can’t wait to meet you.” Eventually, in April last year welcomed their baby daughter Bella into the world and have been sharing some adorable moments since then.

In October 2024, Bencic took to her Instagram story to share a picture of the father-daughter bond with Hromkovic holding Bella in his arms. Hromkovic is not just a romantic partner for Bencic but also her biggest motivator. Just six months after Bella’s birth, Bencic decided to return to the tennis courts, and helping her in the process was her boyfriend. The preparations for her comeback started two months after their daughter was born with just a little exercise, that intensified over the days.
Speaking about the same, Bencic revealed, “Martin learned a lot about the new topic, how to start, with pelvic floor exercises, abdominal and back exercises, to progress step by step.” And it is probably for this reason, that the star player has never failed to express her admiration for Martin Hromkovic. “My partner is incredible, he’s doing a really great job, We’re a good team,” she revealed about their bond.

Speaking at the venue, Bencic said, “Well, I’m definitely improving every day. So that’s very motivating for me to see improvement. I think my tennis is there. I think that’s like riding a bike. I don’t think that you lose that.” When asked if her best tennis is yet to come, she added, “Yeah. one hundred percent. I really believe that. Because I feel like it’s not impossible to come back and play at least at the level I played before. I really feel like I’m still young. I feel confident I still have a lot of good years ahead of me.” However, the sport is no longer her only priority.
Dishing out an honest opinion about the same she shared, “I think it gives me more of, a like, relaxed mode because I think I always want to do my best. Sometimes I put too much pressure on myself. Now I feel like it’s a bit easier to play because, yeah, there’s something more important than tennis.” Now, as she gears up to face Osaka, it will be interesting to see if she can dominate the courts yet again, with all the support she is getting from her family.
