Massachusetts high school sports highlights for Sept. 16

They came minutes apart early Tuesday afternoon, a pair of major Division 1 commitments from Massachusetts athletes.
First it was Newman School senior Quinn Costello announcing his commitment to play men’s basketball at Michigan.
Costello, who played for the 2022 Division 1 champion BC High team, was a lightly regarded prospect heading into the summer, but the 6-foot-10-inch slick-shooting big man had a breakout summer playing for the Middlesex Magic and the Division 1 offers started pouring in. Costello chose Michigan over North Carolina, Purdue, and Michigan State, among others.
Now he’ll head to Michigan, where another former Middlesex Magic player, Duncan Robinson, finished his college career before going on to the Miami Heat in the NBA.
Just minutes later, Taunton junior third baseman Bella Bourque announced that she will play softball at South Carolina.
Bourque helped the Tigers win a fifth-straight Division 1 championship last spring, hitting .475 with five home runs, 46 runs, 37 RBIs, and 14 steals to earn Globe All-Scholastic honors.
Now she’ll play at South Carolina, a program that has been to three straight NCAA Tournaments and made a super regional appearance in 2025.
“I am beyond excited and honored,” Bourque wrote on social media. “First and foremost, I want to thank my parents for the countless hours you’ve dedicated to me throughout this journey — your commitment to me means the world.
