Julianne Moore Walks Backwards For Brain and Body Exercise

Julianne Moore is always looking ahead, except for when she’s practicing a bizarre exercise that her fitness trainer introduced her to.
“I remember I had a trainer who used to say, ‘You should take the opportunity to walk backwards,’” the Sirens actress, 64, told PEOPLE in an interview published on Sunday, October 12. “So, every once in a while, I just go ahead and walk backwards, especially up a hill, because it’s so good for your body and brain, because your brain’s like, ‘Whoa, what’s that?’”
Although Moore prefers to walk backwards to get out of her “normal routine,” the Oscar-winning actress mentioned other effective activities, including “meeting new people, learning a new game, a language — all of those things are things that kind of wake you up.”
The Chloe star admitted to feeling “more alive” when she’s simultaneously moving her body and brain, making “new” and “silly things” – like walking backwards – more enjoyable to learn.
Moore, who shares kids Caleb Moore Freundlich and Liv Helen Moore Freundlich with husband Bart Freundlich, made her health a priority after entering motherhood.
“You have more people that you’re taking care of, you have more people that you love, and you realize that you depend on your body, and if something goes wrong with your body, then it really affects your function,” the North Carolina native continued to the outlet.
Moore doesn’t take her health for granted, and sets aside time in her busy schedule to exercise, eat well and sleep often to “perform to the best of [her] ability.”
In 2023, Moore revealed that she starts each morning by moving her body, which consists of either a yoga class or walking the dogs.
“After my workout class, I’ll have something to eat,” she told Marie Claire at the time. “I’ll have scrambled eggs with toast and fruit or I’ll have a Pressed smoothie. It’s Green Light, but I add mango, and chia, and flax seeds.”
