The biggest surprise among the 10 teams still standing is Wayland, the seventh seed in Division 2, which will take on top-seeded Oliver Ames on Saturday. All finals will be held at Billerica, with times TBD.
Smith Vocational, the No. 7 seed in D5, is also final-bound and will take on No. 1 Hopedale.
Division 1 will pit defending champ and second-seeded Newton South against No. 5 Franklin, playing in its first final.
In Division 3, it’s top-seeded Bellingham vs. Joseph Case, which reached its first final since moving up from D4.
In D4, it’s top-seeded Bourne, last year’s D5 champion, vs. No. 2 East Bridgewater.
While the two field hockey finals that are both 1 vs. 2 affairs — No. 1 Walpole vs. No. 2 Franklin in D1 and No. 1 Uxbridge vs. No. 2 Sandwich in D3 — it was still unnerving to see Watertown, the four-time defending Division 3 champions, fall 7-0 to Uxbridge.
This will be the first time in the statewide era that someone other than the Raiders claims the D3 crown.
Notably, it’s Franklin’s first appearance in the field hockey final, too. Will make for quite a Saturday in Panther country.
Norwell junior Hannah Morse had herself a day, netting four goals in an 8-0 win over Auburn in the Division 3 quarterfinals. Along the way, she surpassed 100 career points, ending the game with 102.
Lowell’s first playoff win in 11 years led to coach Scott Boyle receiving the New England Patriots Coach of the Week award. Boyle, who is in his second stint leading the Red Raiders, coached 10th-seeded Lowell to a 29-21 win over No. 7 Methuen in the first round of the Division 1 tournament.
“What the Lowell Red Raiders did Friday night was what high school football is all about: Heart, Preparation and Pride,” Patriots Hall of Famer Andre Tippett said after presenting the program with a $1,000 check from the Patriots Charitable Foundation and the Kraft family. “You can see a team that believed in each other and refused to quit. That kind of effort is hard to come by a true testament to the commitment and teamwork.”
▪ Needham is welcoming a new girls’ hockey coach, Michael Jewkes, who takes over after several years coaching the Boston Junior Eagles, where he served as head coach for three state championships and two USA Hockey national qualifiers. Jewkes, who has coached Needham Youth Hockey at every age level, takes over a Rockets team that went 10-10-1 and lost in the first round of the Division 1 tournament last year.
▪ Needham also announced it has removed the interim tag from wrestling coach Ryan Hargraves’s title. Hargraves coached the Rockets to a 2-5 record last winter after arriving from Nobles, where he was a varsity assistant. Hargraves has also coached football, rugby, and girls’ flag football at the high school level.

▪ Amherst sophomore Hudson Fulcher-Melendy, a Williston-Northampton graduate from Easthampton, was the NESCAC football Special Teams Player of the Week after connecting on 4 of 4 field goals, including the winner with less than three minutes remaining, to tie the program record in a 14-13 win over Williams.
▪ Emerson junior Kaylin O’Meara, a Littleton graduate, was named NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week for women’s basketball after blocking three shots and nabbing three steals in a 73-36 season-opening win over Baruch.
