Bay City area roundup: Shooting touch is golden right from Game 1

BAY CITY, MI – A look at the high school sports scene in the Bay City area for Dec. 3, 2025. Bay City area coaches are asked to submit results, highlights and comments the night of each game by emailing lthomps2@mlive.com.
BOYS BKB: LAKER 53, ALL SAINTS 34
Playing its first game and in an unfamiliar gym, Laker couldn’t expect its shooting to be on point.
And, yet, the Lakers were sharp as a tack.
Connecting on an impressive 16 of 19 free throws, Laker pulled away from host Bay City All Saints for a 53-34 season-opening victory.
All Saints (0-2) hung tough with the height-advantaged Lakers much of the way, sitting within single digits until nearly midway through the fourth quarter. But Laker had the finishing touch to put the game away.
“We battled and played solid defense for the majority of the game. But we struggled to finish the last 4:30,” All Saints coach Jason Brzezinski said. “Again, there were a lot of positives we can take from this game that will benefit us down the road.”
Jack Wetters delivered 12 points and five rebounds while Jonathan Kirkpatrick added six points for the Cougars.
But 6-foot-5 Caden Carriveau came up big for Laker with 19 points, including 9 of 11 accuracy from the line, to tip the scales. Lucas Wehner notched 14 points and Kade Wisenbaugh eight in the win. Laker connected on 6 of 7 free throws in the final stanza.
BOYS BKB: BIRCH RUN 58, BAY CITY CENTRAL 50
Bay City Central made strides from Game 1 to Game 2, but the Wolves couldn’t quite keep pace with Birch Run.
Central fell shy in a 58-50 non-league setback despite an improved defensive effort and balanced scoring.
Brylon Narvaiz scored 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter to keep Central (0-2) within sight of a victory, but Birch Run had enough to hold on. Gabe Martinus and Braylen Husen each pumped in 20 points to ignite the Panthers, who built a 17-6 first-quarter lead.
Central also got 13 points from Steve Kushion and 11 from Alondro McCall.
BOYS BKB: PINCONNING 60, CLARE 29
Pinconning saw five players score between 8-13 points, providing a balanced attack that proved tough to stop.
Attacking from all angles, the Spartans pulled away from Clare for a 60-29 victory.
“Clare had a good gameplan to try to take Dayne (Ivey) out of the game. But we were practicing for that all week,” Pinconning coach Jason Donahue said. “We knew we had six other great kids who can all contribute.”
Ivey finished with 13 points and nine rebounds while Jaxon Hill came through with 13 points, Ryan Kowalczyk and Marcus Pickett nine apiece and Danny Dubay eight.
Pinconning led 29-19 at the half then rattled off a 17-3 third-quarter spree.
Dane Alexander led Clare with 12 points.
BOYS BKB: SANDUSKY 39, CASS CITY 36
Cass City battled Sandusky down the final shot.
But the Red Hawks couldn’t connect on their last-chance effort and were edged 39-36 by Sandusky.
The back-and-forth contest was a nail-biter, with Cass City taking a 25-23 edge into the final stanza. But Gavin Phillips scored seven of his team-high 11 points down the stretch to give Sandusky the lead.
Will Perry and Kenton Nicholas each scored 10 points for Cass City.
BOYS BKB: OGEMAW 63, ST. LOUIS 36
Ogemaw Heights battled some season-opening rust on the offensive end.
But the Falcons were ready to rock and defense, picking up the pace and racing past St. Louis 63-36 in the season debut.
“Our intensity and aggressive defense fueled our offense,” said Ogemaw coach Alex Jennings, whose team nabbed 22 steals on the night. “All of our guards did a great job stepping up their effort on that end of the floor.”
Gavin Weiler delivered 18 points and nine rebounds in the victory. Eli Smith scored 12 points while Edgar Potter compiled eight points, five steals and five assists.
Xander Brock led St. Louis with eight points.
BOYS BKB: USA 40, CAPAC 37
Unionville-Sebewaing opened the season with a thriller, outdueling Capac 40-37.
Justin Jacobs delivered a 16-point performance in the win while Davis Peters tallied 13 points.
Boston Vock led Capac with 12 points.
BOYS BKB: MERIDIAN 65, GLADWIN 61
In a see-saw battle, one mini run would tip the scales.
Sanford Meridian converted back-to-back three-point plays at an opportune time, taking the lead when it mattered most for a 65-61 win over Gladwin.
Brady Bowen scored 25 points and Josiah Prince tallied 10 in the victory for Meridian.
Gladwin, which owned a four-point lead in the fourth quarter before Meridian’s game-swinging heroics, got a stellar 31-point, 10-rebound double-double from Brody Verellen. Jacob Pahl added 13 points for the Flying G’s while Ben Verellen filled the stat sheet with nine points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
WRESTLING: ONE POINT DENIES PINCONNING
Pinconning couldn’t quite land its first dual win of the season. But the Spartans couldn’t have come any closer.
After an opening 57-18 loss to Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary, the Spartans dueled Mt. Morris on near-equal terms in a 37-36 setback.
Will Branda led Pinconning with a 2-0 record on the day.
