GIRLS BKB: BEAVERTON 78, HARRISON 48
Myah Hubble always finds a way to scratch out points.
And when she’s on a roll, they come in bunches.
Perfectly on cue, the high-scoring Beaverton junior went wild, pouring in 37 points to power the Beavers to a 78-48 victory on a night when she joined the 1,000-point club.
Hubble became the first Beaverton girls basketball player to surpass the 1,000-point plateau since Ali Aldrich in 2018. The electric guard needed 17 points to reach the mark and easily surpassed it.
She sank 15 shots from the field, including four 3-pointers, while also dishing nine assists. The timing was right as Harrison hung within 30-26 at the half and was threatening to hand the Beavers (4-0, 3-0) their first loss.
“Harrison deserves so much credit for playing a really good first half,” Beaverton coach Jason Hubble said. “We took their best punch and countered with a fantastic third quarter.”
Beaverton erupted for a 48-point second half, highlighted by a 20-1 run that put the game in hand.
Freshman Taryn Roberts loomed large once again, producing 25 points and 13 rebounds in the victory. Ryan Tabaszewski pulled down 12 rebounds for the Beavers.
Sam Hopkins fronted Harrison with 19 points.
BOYS BKB: MIDLAND 62, BAY CITY WESTERN 59
It was a game-long slugfest, and Bay City Western went the distance.
But the Warriors couldn’t land a knockout blow and lost a 62-59 decision to Midland in a Saginaw Valley League North bout.
“It was a hard-fought game. One or two possessions were the difference in the game,” Western coach Will Williams said. “Glad to see the guys fight.”
Western (2-4, 0-2) was able to get off a potential game-tying 3-pointer on its final possession but couldn’t connect.
Zay Hardwick poured in 25 points for Western while Preston Kolm came through with an 18-point performance. Jaxon Jenkins and Chance Sajdak each added seven points.
Midland (2-4, 2-1) got a big 27-point effort from Bennett Smith with Jacoby Lind adding 13. The two teams combined to sink 17 3-pointers.
BOYS BKB: TC CHRISTIAN 67, MIO 47
Mio had its highest offensive output of the season, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with Traverse City Christian in a 67-47 non-conference loss.
Brody Fox scored 18 points to pace the Thunderbolts (2-5) while Ty McGregor scored 14 points and dished five assists.
GIRLS BKB: STANDISH 52, OGEMAW 31
Standish-Sterling is asserting itself as a team to beat in the Jack Pine Conference-1, powering to its fourth straight victory to open the season.
The Panthers bolted to a 24-7 first-quarter lead en route to the 52-31 win over Ogemaw Heights.
Keeley Peace kept the stat keeper busy with 13 points, six rebounds, six steals and five assists in the victory for the Panthers (4-0). Adi Walker led the scoring with 14 points while Ava Walker counted 11 points and five rebounds.
Teagan Agren paced Ogemaw (1-2) with 15 points.
BOYS BKB: ST. HELEN HESTON 48, ROGERS CITY 29
St. Helen Charlton Heston is off to a 5-0 start after a 48-29 win over Rogers City in North Star League Big Dipper action.
Heston used a 14-2 third-quarter run to take charge. Owen Romancky scored 21 points, Dylan Cichowski nine points and Garrin Teed seven points with 10 rebounds.
