Rapper and producer John Forté, best known for his work with The Fugees and Wyclef Jean, was found dead last week in his home in Chilmark, Mass.
He was 50 years old.
USA Today reports that police said there were no signs of foul play but also noted that there was no “readily apparent cause of death.”
The state’s medical examiner is currently investigating the case.
Forté rose to fame in the 90s with his work on Fugees tracks like “Family Business” and “Cowboys.”
At age 21, he landed a Grammy nomination for album of the year for his writing and production work on the Fugees’ 1996 album “The Score.”
Forté released his first solo album, “Poly Sci,” in 1998, and his second album, “I, John,” was released in 2001.
During that time, he also worked with rapper and Fugees founding member Wyclef Jean on popular tracks “We Trying to Stay Alive” and “Street Jeopardy.”
“This one hurts,” Jean wrote in a recent post to Instagram.
“My brother (John Forté) has joined the Angels. Legends never die. Look at the smile RIP my Refugee brother.”
Forté is survived by his wife, photographer Lara Fuller, and their two children.
