Bay City area roundup: 500 reasons to celebrate in regular season finale

BAY CITY, MI – A look at the high school girls sports scene in the Bay City area for Feb. 26, 2026. Bay City area coaches are asked to submit results, highlights and comments the night of each game by emailing lthomps2@mlive.com.
GIRLS BKB: BAY CITY WESTERN 54, FLUSHING 31
The Bay City Western girls basketball program is now 500 wins strong.
But it’s the last six that have the Warriors most excited.
With a 54-31 victory over Flushing, the Warriors reached the 500-win mark in the program’s 52-year history. The win was also the 100th as a varsity girls basketball coach for Dan Snover, who spent four seasons at Bay City Central and is now in his fifth year at the helm at Western.
The team was saluted with signs and cake in a postgame ceremony that, for much of the season, looked like it wasn’t going to be needed this year. Once sitting at a 6-10 record, the Warriors (12-10) have rattled off six straight wins to secure a winning campaign and roll into the postseason with a head of steam.
“We play a tough schedule, and there were times in there when it was rough,” Snover said. “These kids want to win. They come to practice every day and they want to see results. But they’ve been resilient and stayed with it and trusted us as a staff, that what we’re doing is going to work.”

Everything has worked of late, particularly the defense that has been the driving force behind the hot streak. Western allowed just four first-quarter points to quickly get the edge on Flushing (7-14), leading 22-16 at the half then stretching it to 39-26 through three.
“Defensively, we’ve been able to do some nice things with coverages and being in the right spot,” said Snover, who has been assisted by Bill Dijak and George Spielhaupter for all 100 career wins. “The kids have taken a liking to it, getting after other teams.”
Freshman Olivia-Jo Rytlewski poured in a career-high 27 points to lead the offense while Khloe Schmidt came through with an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double. Adalyn Zanotti added eight points and six rebounds while Claire Robinson notched six assists.
Western, which sports a 500-613 all-time record, opens postseason play at 7 p.m. Monday against Bay City Central at Midland.
GIRLS BKB: BIRCH RUN 42, BAY CITY CENTRAL 35
Bay City Central took it down to the wire but couldn’t pull off a victory, falling to Birch Run 42-35 in the regular season finale.
Central (1-21) posted its second-highest point total of the season to stay in contention. The Wolves trailed 21-16 at halftime then won the third quarter to draw within 29-28 with one quarter to play.
Birch Run (7-15) finished strong, with Sydney Fox scoring nine of her game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter.
Addison Sirianni hit four 3-pointers and led Central with 14 points while Raielle Pressler added seven.
GIRLS BKB: FRANKENMUTH 47, JOHN GLENN 33
John Glenn wasn’t like to catch Frankenmuth after a rocky start.
But the Bobcats at least wanted to grab their attention.
Battling back from a 20-point deficit against one of the state’s top teams, Glenn made things interesting before falling 47-33 to Tri-Valley Conference Red champion Frankenmuth.
“We settled down and talked at halftime about not quitting and continuing to work,” Glenn coach Dale Clyde said. “And the girls played a great third quarter. They played good defense and got some shots to go down.”
Glenn (14-8, 7-5) drew within 10 points in the fourth quarter before Frankenmuth (14-8, 11-1) finished it at the line. The Eagles hit eight 3-pointers in the opening half en route to the 35-15 advantage. Alyson Peterson led with 16 points.
Glenn was paced by Aubrey Moore with 11 points and Aleeyah Alonzo-Mannie with seven.
GIRLS BKB: AU GRES 44, ALL SAINTS 35
In a clash of league champions, Bay City All Saints had its sights on a signature victory.
But Au Gres puts its name on the win, rallying in the second half as the North Star League Little Dipper co-champion Wolverines downed the Big Thumb Conference Red champion Cougars 44-35.
All Saints (14-7) led by 10 points before taking a 29-21 lead into halftime. But the Cougars would manage just six points the rest of the way as Au Gres (19-3) dominated defensively.
“We had Au Gres on the ropes, but we didn’t do what we needed to get done,” All Saints coach Mike Debo said.
Val Costilla came up big with 17 points and 12 rebounds for All Saints while Kara Schular scored nine points and Lydia Scherzer eight.
