BOYS BKB: BAY CITY WESTERN 79, STANDISH 68
Playing on back-to-back days had one benefit for Bay City Western.
The Warriors only needed to stew about a tough loss for 24 hours.
Determined not to drop two games in two days, Western came out strong and outbattled Standish-Sterling 79-68 in a non-league showdown.
“After a loss last night, we asked the guys to respond,” Western coach Will Williams said. “Down our leading scorer, Nolan Kochany responded and was the spark we needed.”
Kochany stepped up in a big way, drilling four of Western’s six first-quarter 3-pointers en route to a 20-14 lead it never relinquished. Kochany finished with 20 points and Preston Kolm poured in 19 – sinking six 3-pointers – as the Warriors prevailed with top scorer Zay Hardwick out with illness.
Western (3-5) attacked from all angles as six players scored six or more points. Chance Sajdak contributed eight, Brayden Hitts and Andy Robbins seven apiece and Jack Gillis six. Western hit 13 3-pointers in the contest, shaking off its loss to Midland Dow one day earlier.
“Every time we made a run, Western hit a big shot,” Standish coach Matt Koin said. “They shot very well.”
Standish (6-3) saw its six-game winning streak come to a halt. After trailing 39-27 at the half, the Panthers outscored Western 41-40 in an evenly matched second half.
Standish put four players in double scoring figures as Karter Fegan tallied 23, Vance Stokoszynski 12, Landon Nixon 11 and Marshall Kridler 10.
BOYS BKB: DAVISON 72, BAY CITY CENTRAL 47
Bay City Central took on a tough road assignment in Davison, dropping the Saginaw Valley League crossover contest 72-47.
The Wolves (1-9) were paced by Steve Kushion with 13 points. Brylon Narvaiz scored 11 and Alondro McCall nine in the loss.
BOYS BKB: KINGSTON 48, ALL SAINTS 33
Bay City All Saints held Kingston in check but couldn’t counter at the other end, dropping a 48-33 decision.
“Defensively, we loved the energy and effort our guys brought,” All Saints coach Jason Brzezinski said. “However, we need to do a better job of taking care of the basketball and having so many empty possessions if we want to give ourselves a chance to win.”
All Saints (2-6) managed just 12 first-half points but hovered within 23-12 behind its solid defensive play. Jack Wetters led the Cougars with 10 points while five other players finished with four points. Wetters pulled down seven rebounds and Bo Williams snared six.
Kingston was paced by Colin Corlis with 17 points and Peyton Harrington with 11.
BOYS BKB: LAKER 67, CARO 65 (OT)
Just two games into the league season, Laker and Caro took their first-place showdown to heart.
Caden Carriveau sank a jumper at the buzzer in overtime, lifting Laker to a thrilling 67-65 victory in the first crucial Big Thumb Conference White clash of the year.
Laker (6-1, 2-0) and Caro (6-2, 1-1) were knotted at 56-56 at the end of regulation. Laker’s Kade Wisenbaugh and Caro’s Landyn Stine traded clutch 3-pointers in overtime, setting the stage of Carriveau’s heroics.
The 6-foot-5 senior took a sideline in-bounds pass with three seconds on the clock and drained a fade away shot as time expired, setting off the Laker celebration. Carriveau finished with 19 points while Lucas Wehner scored 13, Luke Good 11 and Wisenbaugh nine.
Caro was paced by Xander Grice with 18 points, Connor McGarry 17, Ethan Kocher 15 and Stine with 10.
BOYS BKB: CASS CITY 51, BAD AXE 46
Bad Axe was nipping at its heels all night, but Cass City stayed one step ahead for a 51-46 victory in Big Thumb Conference White play.
After trailing 15-13 through one, Cass City (3-4, 1-1) took a 34-27 lead into halftime and never relinquished it in a tight battle.
Griffin Weiler led Cass City with 15 points while ZyAire Oesterling scored 11 and Kenton Nicholas eight. Mason Hurley led Bad Axe with 12 points and A.J. Fritz tallied 10.
BOYS BKB: REESE 68, VASSAR 35
Reese grabbed control with a strong second quarter, pulling away from Vassar for a 68-35 victory in Big Thumb Conference White action.
Reese used a 21-8 second-quarter burst to take charge at 33-16.
Steele Stricker pumped in 20 points in the win while Hudson Stein scored 11 and Nick Yates nine. Vassar was led by Michael Olivarez with 13 and Chayce Zarko with 11.
BOYS BKB: BEAVERTON 67, ROSCOMMON 42
Beaverton’s basketball history is filled with prolific scorers, and the Beavers check that box again this year.
But the Beaverton tradition is built on defense, and that was on full display when it mattered most in a 67-42 victory over Roscommon.
The Beavers (7-1) trailed 30-29 at the half only to hold Roscommon to a single bucket in the third quarter to dramatically take control. Beaverton erupted for a 21-2 third-quarter spree.
“To go into halftime losing, make some adjustments and come out and play a third quarter like that was nice to see,” Beaverton coach Shad Woodruff said.
Beaverton got another whirlwind offensive performance from its 1-2 scoring punch. Ian Roberts poured in 31 points and Landon Love counted 27 while each pulled down eight rebounds. Woodruff noted Sean Barta as a crucial piece of the defensive effort in the win.
“Sean Barta has bought into his job defensively, which is one great way to make an old grump like me smile,” he said.
