BASEBALL: WESTERN RALLIES FOR SWEEP
Bay City Western yielded its first run and faced its first deficit.
And delivered its first come-from-behind victory.
The No. 9-ranked Warriors rallied from a three-run deficit in the late innings to complete a 10-0 and 8-3 sweep of Flushing, improving to 4-0 on the season.
“The second game was a grind,” Western coach Tim McDonald said. “But it was a nice comeback, especially since we had a lot of guys contribute and we made some key plays defensively, baserunning and with some clutch hits.”
Western notched its third consecutive shutout in the opener as Gabe Wegener struck out four over four scoreless innings and Dawson Lavender fanned three in two hitless frames. Andy Robbins tripled and drove in four runs in the win while Jaxon Jenkins and Cal Plarske each knocked two hits.
The unblemished streak ended in the nightcap as Flushing built a 3-0 lead and stood six outs from the victory. But the Western bats came alive, scoring five runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull off the 8-3 win.
Kam Bedell drilled three hits and joined Owen Bebbe with two RBIs while Caleb Conway knocked two hits. Winning pitcher Owen Dominowski combined with Brady Vrable and Lavender to strike out seven.
