LA Galaxy vs. New York City Player Ratings: Marco Reus Shines but Not Enough in MLS Opener

LA Galaxy hosted New York City FC on Sunday, Feb. 22, at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson at 4 p.m. PT, 7 p.m. ET, in the 2026 MLS season opener.
Last season, NYCFC lost the conference final against Inter Miami, falling 1-5. The Sky Blues’ only goal was scored by Justin Haak, who now plays for the LA Galaxy.
The Los Angeles Galaxy drew 1-1 against Sporting San Miguelito in their first match of the 2026 season, the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup round of 32.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with goals from Jonathan Klauss in the 2nd minute, assisted by Marco Reus, and Nico Fernandez in the 66th minute, from the penalty spot.

Marco Reus was on his way to being the MVP of the match, but the double yellow and red card to Carlos Garces caused the German to be substituted to bring on Maya Yoshida and reinforce the defense.
Nicolas Fernandez performed well for the visiting side, scoring a goal on three shots. Tayvon Gray and Raul also stood out for NYCFC. Here are our player ratings:

LA Galaxy’s next match will be against Sporting San Miguelito on Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup round of 32. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw.
NYCFC, meanwhile, will visit Philadelphia Union on Sunday, March 1, in Matchday 2 of the MLS.
