▪ After several Massachusetts girls’ volleyball players reached the 1,000-assist threshold recently, Central Catholic junior Julie Hall notched her 1,000th career dig in a 3-1 win over Andover. Hall finished with 22 kills and 22 digs as she eclipsed the milestone.
▪ Chelmsford girls’ volleyball dug up a 3-1 win over Billerica thanks to 19 kills and 23 digs from Kyra Ward to clinch the Merrimack Valley Conference’s Division 1 title.
▪ Oliver Ames boys’ soccer rode two goals from Cyrus Hanjani to a 2-0 win over Stoughton and its seventh Hockomock League Davenport division title in a row. Zack Gilson recorded his eight shutout.
▪ Methuen boys’ cross-country locked up the MVC’s Division 2 title with a 20-41 win over Tewksbury. John Fantry, TJ O’Brien, Ismael Montero, Anwar Mamdouh, and Joe Nims all finished within 30 seconds of each other, taking five of the top six spots.
▪ Canton’s Tristan Grant broke the school record on the 5K course at Pequitside in 19 minutes, 4 seconds during a 17-38 loss to Mansfield.
▪ Wakefield senior Jackie Sullivan recorded her 100th block in a 3-0 win over Melrose on Tuesday. She finished the match with four, giving her 101 for her career and the school record. It was the Warriors’ first win over Melrose in the 13-year history of the program.
▪ Also on Tuesday, Weymouth freshman Samantha Noble broke the school record in the 100-yard butterfly, racing to a time of 1 minute, 2.4 seconds in a win against Braintree.
Tuesday also saw King Philip junior Ella Morgan score twice, tallying her 100th career goal in a 2-0 Hockomock field hockey win over Foxborough.
▪ Needham High announced the hiring of Lindsay (Hallion) Miller as its girls’ basketball coach. A two-time state champion as a player for Westwood, she graduated as the school’s all-time leading scorer (boys and girls) and went on to captain Harvard’s women’s basketball and earn a pair of All-Ivy League selections.
After playing overseas, she returned to serve as an assistant girls’ basketball coach and athletic director at Westwood. She most recently served as the head coach at Rivers.
Miller replaces Hannah Carroll, who coached for three seasons and led the Rockets to a 12-10 mark last year.
Andrea Van Horn has been hired as the girls’ indoor track coach at North Andover, doubling up on her position as field hockey coach.
A North Andover alumna, she competed in track and field hockey in high school and has spent the past 23 years as an assistant coach for the track program.
This week’s New England Patriots Coach of the Week is a familiar name to any high school football fan in the state.
Milton’s Steve Dembowski was honored with the award after picking up his 200th career win in a 35-7 victory over Wachusett. Dembowski, 200-95 overall, is in his 11th season at Milton, where he is 86-28.
“Steve Dembowski’s 200th career win is a remarkable milestone that reflects his dedication, consistency and commitment to excellence,” said Patriots Hall of Famer Andre Tippett, who presented the program with $1,000 from the Kraft family and Patriots Charitable Foundation. “Throughout his career, he has built programs that not only win games but also shape outstanding student-athletes and leaders.”
▪ Westfield State freshman Caroline Andrade, a Watertown High graduate, was named National Field Hockey Coaches Association Offensive Player of the Week for Division 3. Andrade tallied five goals and three assists in a 3-0 week for the Owls after missing the season’s first six games with an injury.
▪ Westfield state senior Julianne Kelly, a Natick graduate, was named MASCAC Runner of the Week after finishing fifth in 18:53.07 on the 5K course at the 29th annual James Earley Invitational, leading the Owls to a second-place finish, their best in the history of the meet.
▪ Wesleyan freshman Emily Smith, a Taft graduate from Boston, was named NESCAC field hockey Player of the Week after scoring both of the Cardinals’ goals in a 2-1 double-overtime win at Middlebury. She followed up with the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Williams, which clinched the Little Three Championship for the first time since 2003 and fourth time in school history.
▪ Lehigh junior goalie Kate Burgess, a Governor’s graduate from Holden, made the Patriot League honorable mention list for field hockey after making two saves in a 3-0 shutout of Colgate, and adding 11 saves in a 2-0 loss to Cornell.
▪ Lehigh senior Geoffrey Jamiel, a Deerfield graduate from West Yarmouth, was a Patriot League football honorable mention after catching nine passes for a career-high 182 yards and a touchdown to beat Columbia, 31-7. He was featured on SportsCenter Top 10 for his 45-yard, one-handed catch in the second quarter.
▪ Northeastern junior goalkeeper Eliza Teplow, a Nobles graduate from Wellesley, was named Colonial Athletic Association girls’ soccer Defensive Player of the Week after posting a clean sheet and matched her career high with nine saves in a 1-0 win over Stony Brook.
▪ On Friday, Norton football will be hosting Medway for Military Appreciation Night, which will be followed by a veterans’ luncheon Saturday.
For Friday’s 7 p.m. game, each Norton player will wear a special game jersey featuring the name and branch of a US military veteran. On Saturday the team will host and serve lunch to veterans at the Norton VFW, where they will present each veteran with a jersey from the game.
▪ The B.A.A. Boston Middle School Cross-Country Championship will be held Wednesday, Oct. 22 at Franklin Park. The B.A.A. has hosted this event since 1996.
Races start at approximately 10:45 a.m. with more than 400 students from 10 Boston middle schools slated to compete in individual and relay races to determine the fastest middle schoolers in the city.
The top finishers in the boys’ and girls’ races will earn a spot in April’s B.A.A. Middle School 1K.
▪ Winchester High is set to open its new gymnasium on Friday, Oct. 24 with a girls’ volleyball match vs. Belmont.
